More young teachers in Quebec are quitting


Nearly a quarter of young teachers in Quebec don't make it past five years on the job, according to a new survey.

The research was done by the Interuniversity Research Centre, independent from current contract negotiations between the government and teachers unions.

Thierry Karsenti, a Director at the Research Centre, told the Journal de Montreal they spoke with 1252 participants and two main issues appear to lead to early departures.

Karsenti said many new teachers are not prepared for the amount of extra work they need to do.

Many said they could not handle the extra hours needed to grade papers and prepare courses, which often took up their entire evening and weekend.  (more...)
