School board to expand de-streaming pilot project


More Toronto public high schools will limit “streaming” of students into so-called applied and academic courses following a decision by a board committee last week to expand successful pilot projects.

A recent report for the Toronto District School Board called “Sifting, Sorting and Selecting” found that low-income and minority students were disproportionately affected by “streaming.”

“One of the longstanding concerns that the system has had is the gaps and inequities between one student and another,” said Pamela Gough, chair of the programs and school services committee. “If there’s anything that gets a trustee’s dander up it’s any suggestion that a student’s ethnic background should hold them back.”

It’s not clear how many high schools might make changes to streaming in the near future.  (more...)
