Catholic trustees axe $120,000 plan to hire help


Toronto Catholic trustees have reversed plans to hire personal assistants after Education Minister Liz Sandals blasted the move.

In a statement provided to the Star, Sandals said the $120,000 — or $10,000 each — that trustees recently voted to spend on help was “disappointing” and noted the Toronto Catholic District School Board is “currently working on a deficit recovery plan to return the board to a positive fiscal position as quickly as possible. It is our expectation that the board work to balance their budget prior to considering hiring personal administrative assistants for trustees.

“Moreover, the board should be using any additional funds to support programming and supports for students. Our priority is for education funding to be spent on the programs and services that benefit all of our students.”  (more...)
