The Peoples Conference for Palestine: Another Step Forward

Detroit Peoples Conference for Palestine solidarity resistance subud politics genocide imperialism colonialism

The well-organized Palestine conference in Detroit brought more than 4,600 there, with a heavy Palestinian presence.

Most of the speakers in the plenaries were genuine Palestinian activists tested in battle, not well-known writers or professors.

The over 270 journalists who have been targeted and murdered for informing the world of the endless U.S.-Israeli slaughter of civilians were honored throughout the three days, that included more than 20 sessions and plenaries, exhibits, including Palestinian cultural performances, a grand vendor fair and art exhibits.

It was made clear that Israel is the U.S. garrison state in the Middle East, out to break the Palestinian people’s resistance.

U.S.-Israel aim to destroy their confidence in the ability to resist and fight back, and as the Final Solution, to wipe Palestinians off their homeland.

The U.S.-Israeli military operations, through relentless carpet bombing, mass shootings of civilians and starvation, aim to kill Palestinians until they decide to flee.

If this is a war, then so are the mass shootings in the U.S., with the perpetrators shooting school children and civilians presented as an army of snipers in an armed conflict against their recalcitrant enemy.

Dr. Mohammed Mustafa, a Palestinian emergency doctor now living in Australia who has done medical missions to Gaza, spoke in the plenary Gaza is the Center of the World: “Health care in Gaza is not a failure by accident but sabotage by design with doctors killed and aid blocked. That is the reality of Gaza. It is a mirror that is being held up to humanity. Why is it that baby formula is banned from Gaza? Why is it that feeding a child is considered a threat? Why are ambulances and hospitals turned into targets of war? When did bread and milk become weapons? When did saving lives become a crime? Gaza is the only place on Earth where nourishing a baby is an act of resistance. It is the only place where life itself is viewed as a weapon of war.”  (more...)

Gaza is the Compass: Second annual People’s Conference for Palestine

Gaza is the Compass People's Conference for Palestine Detroit Michigan organizing activism education advocacy

From August 29-31, thousands of Palestine supporters will gather in Detroit, Michigan, for the second annual People’s Conference for Palestine, guided by the principle: Gaza is the Compass.

For two years, Gaza has been a moral and political compass that has guided so many towards true liberation.

Israel, with full US backing and support, is starving 2 million Palestinians, carrying out a plan for mass displacement and ethnic cleansing in both Gaza and the West Bank, and continuously bombing and shooting Palestinians with the number of martyrs rising daily.

Israel’s brutality, though gruesome and with the ultimate price being paid by Palestinians in Gaza, resembles more the last thrashes of a dying beast, than it does a mighty force. Zionism itself is facing an existential crisis. Around the world, Israel’s murderous rampage has given it a spotlight for international scrutiny and has turned Zionism into a pariah among the world’s masses.

Israel has been exposed on the world stage, for its colonial, apartheid, and genocidal project that continues to dispossess and oppress the Palestinian people. This political turning point provides us with an opportunity to utilize every tactic and strategy to ensure this genocide not only comes to an end, but also that Zionism fails to survive this indelible mark in history.

This is not the time to despair, but a pivotal time to come together with greater strength and fight even harder to end the genocide and occupation of Palestine once and for all. Gaza calls us to bear witness. Gaza demands that we look closer even when they try to force us to look away—and we refuse to look away.

At the end of this month, thousands of Palestine’s supporters will be convening in Detroit, Michigan for the second annual People’s Conference for Palestine, guided by the principle: Gaza is the Compass. This conference is a place for all, whether it’s activists, students, workers who have been on the streets and organizing at their institutions for Palestine, or families with young children hoping to build consciousness in the minds of the next generation. We will all convene to recommit to Gaza and to collectively determine the next phase of our movement for liberation.  (more...)

Detroit Fights Back: Why We Must Confront the Fascist Threat Facing Us Today

There is a political tradition in the United States which paved the way to what the current administration is imposing

Since the concluding months, weeks and days of the first administration of President Donald Trump, there has been clear indications of a threat to fundamental norms which ostensibly guide the political system in the United States.

Amid a general wave of mass demonstrations and rebellions during the summer of 2020 in response to the police execution of George Floyd in Minneapolis and other incidents of racist violence, Trump evoked the Insurrection Act of the early 1800s when African enslavement was enshrined in the constitutional framework of the U.S.

For months prior to the November 2020 elections, the Trump administration and its supporters were saying that if they lost the elections, it would only be due to massive fraud. The followers of Trump, the MAGA Republicans, are still maintaining that the 2020 presidential elections were stolen.

The January 6, 2021 neo-fascist insurrection at Capitol Hill provided a glimpse of the willingness of the modern day far right to use violence not just against the oppressed peoples and those with whom they disagree politically, but to seize control of the state in order to purge undesirable elements from positions of authority. This removal of large segments of the population extends far beyond those in political positions, the threat has been extended to millions of immigrants, African Americans, Latin Americans, people whose ancestry can be found in various regions of Asia and the South Pacific.  (more...)

”The MAGA movement wants to return to the days of legalized segregation, gender discrimination, the elimination of trade unions, civil rights organizations, and anyone in opposition to the fascist trajectory of the state.”

That was the urgent warning from political analyst and longtime Detroit activist Abayomi Azikiwe, delivered to a crowd of 60 residents, union members, and community leaders gathered at the Detroit Public Library on Saturday. The event, organized by the Detroit Anti-Fascist Organizing Committee, served as both a rallying cry and a dire alert about the growing threat of fascism in the U.S.

“The January 6 insurrection was not an aberration—it was a preview,” Azikiwe said.

Azikiwe connected today’s political climate—marked by Elon Musk’s fascistic flirtations, Trump’s attacks on immigrants and organized labor, and the erosion of federal workers’ rights—to the corporate-state mergers of fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini.

Azikiwe reminded the audience that between the 1880s and the 1930s, more than 5,000 Black Americans were lynched without federal intervention.

“There was never an anti-lynching law passed during this period in the U.S.,” Azikiwe noted, arguing that today’s scapegoating of oppressed communities follows the same reactionary logic.  (more...)

Free Palestine! Hands Off Our Students!

Detroit Wayne State University student activism Palestine solidarity militarized police repression faculty staff brutality violence organizing resistance crackdown

Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine formed at Detroit’s Wayne State University

On June 4, hundreds of students, faculty, alumni and community members rallied on the campus of Wayne State University located in the Midtown District of Detroit.

The purpose of the gathering was to send a clear message to the recently appointed President Kimberly Andrews Espy who ordered a Palestine solidarity encampment raided and destroyed by campus police on May 30.

Metropolitan Detroit embodies the largest population of people of Arab and Middle Eastern descent in the United States. Consequently, many people within this community have direct familial and linguistic ties to the people most impacted by the settler-colonial regime occupying Palestine.

WSU’s chapter of the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) has taken a leadership role at the higher educational institution by demanding the full disclosure and divestment of all financial and other ties between the University and the State of Israel. The movement for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) has spread rapidly across hundreds of colleges and universities in the U.S.

This movement in solidarity with the Palestinian people has been met with repression resulting in the arrest of over 3,000 people. In Detroit at WSU on May 30, 12 people were arrested when the police stormed the encampment at 6:00am.

If the University administration believed that they had finished off the Palestine solidarity movement on campus, they were grossly mistaken. Later that same day on May 30, a press conference was held where the president of the faculty union spoke in support of the right of the students to protest.

Later that evening a tribunal was held near Eastern Market where testimony from the students involved in the BDS movement from the University of Michigan and Wayne State University exposed the links these institutions have with the genocide taking place in Gaza. At WSU, the Palestine solidarity encampment was labelled “Popular University for Gaza.” It was also designated as a “liberated zone.”  (more...)

Detroit’s WSU Palestine Solidarity Encampment Raided and Shut Down by Police

Detroit Wayne State University student activism Palestine solidarity encampment police raid crackdown brutality violence disclosure divestment boycott sanction arms embargo Israel

At 6:00am cops rushed in breaking up the peaceful protest which is demanding the disclosure and divestment of Wayne State University from entities with investments in the State of Israel

After seven full days of an encampment at the center of Wayne State University in Detroit, campus police raided and removed the encampment which has demanded the complete divestment from corporations which have interests in the State of Israel.

The encampment began with a demonstration on Thursday May 23 starting on Woodward Avenue and West Warren, which is the location of the WSU Welcome Center.

Hundreds of students, faculty and community members then marched west on Warren on to the campus where the encampment was constructed right across from the Undergraduate Library (UGL). For seven days, the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and their allies maintained the solidarity camp around the clock providing food, water, medical services along with educational workshops and cultural presentations.

The Palestine solidarity activists issued nine demands to the university administration including full disclosure of financial ties with the Israeli regime; divestment from these holdings; a public statement decrying the genocide in Gaza; reaffirm students’ First Amendment rights to protest and dissent; protect students and faculty members advocating for Palestine from all forms of hostility and conduct; a formal inquiry into the harassment they experience; accurately represent the city of Detroit and call for a ceasefire; offer financial and legal help for Palestinian students who are on a visa; and offer programming for Palestinians and people who have been evacuated from Gaza.  (more...)

Thousands in Detroit Open Next Phase of Palestine Struggle

student activism Palestine solidarity conference organizing Detroit Michigan Palestinian Youth Movement Columbia University encampment demonstrations justice

Over 3,500 people gathered in Detroit, Michigan for a three-day People’s Conference for Palestine on May 24, 25 and 26. Led by the Palestinian Youth Movement, the conference highlighted the work that has already been done over the last 8 months but also the historical work done over years and decades in the struggle to end Zionist occupation. Participants heard about how education, art, music, literature, labor and much more play a role in this evolving struggle. The conference celebrated and uplifted the martyrs, political prisoners and fighters in Palestine. Perhaps most importantly, it laid the groundwork for the next steps for the movement to go forward.

Rachel and I were both there, and today on this special episode, we’ll be listening to a few clips from the conference and reflecting on what this historic convening means for the struggle. We want to thank our friends at BreakThrough News for livestreaming the plenary sessions, keynotes and many of the workshops, and for letting us use their audio on our program.

State Repression and Palestine Solidarity

Wayne State University Michigan student activism Palestine solidarity Detroit Gaza genocide encampment ethnic cleansing Zionism racism Islamophobia oppression white supremacy dehumanization discrimination academia civil rights

A nationally coordinated effort to shut down Palestine solidarity encampments across the United States on university and college campuses has further exposed the links between imperialism and the ongoing genocide which has resulted in the deaths of more than 35,000 people over the last seven months.

President Joe Biden has repeatedly stated that the U.S. ruling class and governmental support for the State of Israel remains “ironclad.”

Such comments reflect clearly the indispensable role of the Zionist state in the overall geostrategic interests of the U.S. and its allies within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The Biden administration attempts to rationalize the unconditional assistance to Tel Aviv saying that the settlers have “no place else to go” while never expressing any sympathy for the plight of Palestinians living under the domination of the Zionist government for 76 years.

The position of the current administration in Washington has alienated it from many people domestically within the rubric of the Democratic Party electorate. A campaign to abandon Biden through voting “uncommitted” in the primary elections was born in the state of Michigan which has a large Arab and Muslim American population.

This campaign, initially labelled “Listen to Michigan”, garnered 101,000 votes during the primary elections in March. The same pattern has continued in other states, particularly those considered essential for a Democratic Party victory over former President Donald Trump in November.

Despite these rapidly unfolding developments on an electoral and mass level, the Biden White House along with the majority of politicians in both Houses of Congress have refused to heed the calls of the students and workers for an immediate ceasefire as well as a radical shift in U.S. foreign policy towards the Palestinians. It appears that the administration is willing to risk its own prospects for reelection rather than endanger the imperialist objectives in West Asia and North Africa.

On May 20, police at the aegis of the University of Michigan administration, tore down the Palestine solidarity encampment which had existed for several weeks. The removal of the encampment and solidarity activists at U-M represents a pattern implemented from California to Texas and New York state.  (more...)

The World Economic Forum’s Plot to Murder Detroit

Detroit industry WEF depopulation deindustrialization sovereignty crimes against humanity economy finance speculation looting neofeudalism oligarchy green climate change great reset new normal

On April 4, 2022, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), with as much fanfare as they could muster, issued a new report—their third report this year—announcing, yet again, the threat of “Imminent Climate Catastrophe.”  In a statement accompanying the report, the IPCC demanded that, “It’s now or never,” for mandatory drastic reductions in carbon dioxide and methane gas emissions.  Mentally challenged John Kerry, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, responded by declaring that the Report, “represents a defining moment for our planet.”

This latest IPCC Report would not be particularly noteworthy but for the fact that it is part of what is now very clearly an escalation by the financial oligarchy to impose the full brutal agenda defined by the World Economic Forum and the UN Climate Change Conferences for depopulation, deindustrialization, and elimination of national sovereignty.  Many national governments, including the craven Biden administration, as well as the Silicon Valley tech monopolies and most of the imperial Central Banking System, have all reached agreement to ratchet up the drive to completely destroy what is left of the productive economy of the United States and other nations.  As they, themselves, state, “Its Now or Never.”

It is within the larger context of this genocidal intention that the observer must view the initiative, announced on August 19, 2021 by Klaus Schwab’s World Economic Forum, to establish a new global Centre for Urban Transformation in the city of Detroit.  What is now planned is to use the city of Detroit as the model for the complete destruction of America’s already devastated cities.  The anti-human ghouls behind this project are so arrogant and so dismissive of sovereign government that they didn’t even bother to use correct American spelling in naming their new spawn.

In proclaiming the new Centre for Urban Transformation, Jeff Merritt, Head of Urban Transformation for the World Economic Forum, blathered, “Around the globe, cities are facing unprecedented challenges from COVID-19 to climate change, exposing deep systemic inequities.  As we chart a course towards a more sustainable and equitable future, government cannot carry this burden alone; increased public-private cooperation is essential.  Detroit is uniquely positioned to serve as the epicenter for this work.”  (more...)

Toronto St. Mike's College and St. Basil's Seminary Graduate: The populist US priest who set up an antisemitic militia

Catholic Toronto Basilian fascism Nazi anti-semitism media radio clergy Detroit militia America First incitement

At the height of the Great Depression in the early 1930s, 30 million Americans tuned their dials every Sunday afternoon to listen to the words of a Catholic priest from the Detroit suburbs.

But Father Charles Coughlin had long strayed beyond children’s catechism classes.

Instead, the so-called “radio priest” served up a mix of economic populism, staunch anti-communism and conspiracy theories — ones in which, as the decade dragged on, Jews would inevitably come to figure ever-more prominently.

Although now largely a historical footnote, Coughlin, who was born 120 years ago this week, prefigured the later rise of talk radio, has drawn comparisons with Donald Trump, and offers a historical perspective on current debates around the role of media companies in policing the boundaries of free speech.

Born in Canada, Coughlin attended a seminary in Toronto before being ordained a priest in 1916. After 10 years teaching at a Catholic college, he accepted the invitation of the Bishop of Detroit to establish a new parish in Royal Oak, a working-class suburb of the city, where he went on to build his church, the Shrine of the Little Flower.

Coughlin later claimed that, a few weeks after his arrival, the Ku Klux Klan — which targeted Catholics as well as Jews and African Americans — burned a cross in the churchyard. A sympathetic Irish-Catholic businessman, who owned Detroit’s WJR radio station, allowed the priest time on air to explain Catholicism to the community.  (more...)
