This week we welcome former RCMP Superintendent, and highly respected organized crime expert Garry Clement. Garry is the author of Under Cover - Fifty Years of Dirty Money, Organized Crime and the RCMP, and brings insight into the Ryan Wedding story, as well as how Canada is dealing with international criminal organizations.

Stories covered this week include the coordinated raids the RCMP conducted this week on Mi'kmaq-run cannabis dispensaries on First Nations Reserves, proposed legislation that would keep secret the names of children who died in the care of child protection authorities, a peculiar situation in New Brunswick where a witness in a murder trial was placed in a jail cell with transcripts of other witnesses to that same trial, and a law journal article that argues Gabriel Wortman was the beneficiary of his race and class as he committed his murders in 2020.

This week we welcome documentary filmmaker, Amy Herdy, of Cove Tower, based out of Boulder, Colorado. Amy is looking into making a documentary on the NS mass shootings after having read Paul's books on the subject. She discusses the industry, why she thinks no documentaries have been made to date about the shootings, and how she is different from other filmmakers.

Also this week, Paul and Adam discuss the Open AI meeting with federal ministers in the wake of the Tumbler Ridge school shootings. Should there be an inquiry into the school shootings.

Former NS Justice Minister Becky Druhan's seems to harbour ambitions to take on her former leader, Premier Tim Houston. She hinted at those ambitions in an interview she gave with CBC Information Morning, in the midst of Premier Houston's worst week as Premier.

How data on the crackdown on Gaza protests reflects the increasing repression of activist movements in the U.S.

Palestine solidarity Gaza protests repression police extremism crackdowns escalation Israel bias

Data shows Gaza protesters faced harsher punishments than Black Lives Matter protesters did just a few years ago. Experts tell Mondoweiss this is the result of pro-Israel bias and a backlash against protest movements that has been building for years.

Protests over the unfolding genocide in Gaza erupted across the U.S. in 2023, quickly becoming the largest mass demonstration since Black Lives Matter a few years earlier. In both cases, the protest movements took aim at state violence and oppression against marginalized groups.

Deeper scrutiny of the protests and law enforcement response reveals how the U.S. government at all levels has escalated its repressive tactics during the last five years. One telling statistic shows how a strong majority of cases filed against Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020 were dropped or dismissed, but the crackdown on Gaza demonstrators has grown even more draconian and resulted in harsher punishments.

Why is this?

While the protest movements’ contexts preclude a direct apples-to-apples comparison, around 100 legal observers and attorneys who discussed the issue with Mondoweiss say the escalation reflects pro-Israel bias in the political system, a strengthening of anti-protest tactics, and a conservative shift in the nation’s attitude about law enforcement.

The shift is part of a broader pattern of political opponents to social justice movements building upon anti-protest strategies across Standing Rock, Black Lives Matter, Cop City, and Gaza protests, said Stefanie Fox, executive director of Jewish Voice For Peace.

The goal, civil rights advocates say, is to silence dissent.

“It is clear evidence of an escalating war on protest that the right wing has been waging for the past few decades,” said Fox, who protested at Standing Rock. She sees “vestiges of lawfare to take down water protectors at Standing Rock directly being used against anti-genocide protesters.”

“And the Gaza protests will be used by the right to sharpen new tools that will then be used against all of our communities and all social movements,” Fox added. The theory is supported by the escalation of tactics against ICE protesters currently being witnessed in Minneapolis and elsewhere.  (more...)

This week, we take a few minutes to lament the gold medal hockey game loss to the US, before discussing the stories of the week. This week saw the US Supreme Court strike down the tariff's that had been imposed by President Trump, as Adam had predicted after hearing the arguments before that Court. Also, we learned this week that the Tumbler Ridge school shooter was banned from Open AI for their postings on that platform, a school trustee in BC was fined $750,000 for comments about gender identity in the curriculum, and the Surrey Police have been denied in their request to delay their takeover of the RCMP in that region.

Guest Dave Moore, a retired RCMP investigator, takes us inside the struggle for law enforcement to tackle the issue of securing our ports, and has a suggestion for how that may be done, taking after the example of Rotterdam.

Israeli firms transform cars into intelligence devices: Reports

technoligy CARINT Israel surveillance unaccountability fascism oppression targeting

Modern vehicle intelligence systems are reshaping global surveillance through AI-driven data fusion, connected vehicles tracking, and cybersecurity tools.

Modern vehicles have evolved into internet-connected digital ecosystems, a transformation that is reshaping the global intelligence market, with "Israel" paying special attention to this rising domain, according to a new investigation by Haaretz.

In intelligence circles, information harvested from vehicles is known as “CARINT,” short for car intelligence. Today’s vehicles function as “computers on wheels,” equipped with built-in SIM cards, GPS systems, Bluetooth connectivity, and multimedia platforms that continuously transmit data.

The report reveals that at least three Israeli companies are operating in this expanding sector, developing tools that enable government clients to track vehicle movements in real time, cross-reference vast databases, and identify specific targets among thousands of cars on the road.

Industry sources cited in the investigation described the use of AI-powered “data fusion” systems that combine vehicle telemetry, roadside camera feeds, advertising data, and cellular metadata to construct comprehensive intelligence profiles. Rather than directly hacking a device, agencies are increasingly assembling what sources describe as a surveillance mosaic from legally or commercially available data streams.  (more...)

Zionist-controlled companies to surveil British citizens

Britain Zionists surveillance technology outsourcing extremism police repression fascism privacy rights unaccountability

The implications of the British state using technology produced by Zionist-controlled companies to surveil British citizens are beyond belief.

The cornerstone of a sovereign nation is the absolute control over its own justice, its own data, and its own watchmen. Yet today, the very machinery of British law enforcement is being quietly and systemically outsourced.

The British government has allowed the digital and physical infrastructure of the state to become a high tech extension of a foreign power, driven by the pernicious influence of Zionism, an ideology that prioritizes the expansion of a foreign entity over the rights of people in the UK.

This is not merely a matter of procurement. It is a surrender of independence.

By embedding Zionist-linked firms into the heartbeat of British society, the government is importing a surveillance philosophy rooted in the subjugation of one people and applying it to their own subjects.

These are combat-proven technologies forged in the fires of the Gaza genocide, and they are now the primary eyes and ears of the metropolitan police.

The police use Israeli intelligence firm Cellebrite to unlock the phones and private lives of their own citizens. They also use BriefCam to track people's movements through video synopsis.  (more...)

This week, we bring a special guest, who's name most will not recognize. Melissa Ellsworth was a forensics nurse and correctional guard who suffered a head injury trying to save an elderly woman from a dangerous patient. She has been battling Workers Compensation ever since, and has now been approved for Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). She tells her story.

Before hearing from Melissa, Paul and Adam discuss the school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, BC, including what we might be able to conclude from what we know about the shooter, their family, and their background.

Seemingly connected to this tragedy was the announcement late this week from the Minister of Public Safety that the federal government will be sticking with the RCMP in more or less its current form.

While we were waiting for Melissa Ellsworth to get connected, Adam told Paul about a Nova Scotia case that went to the Supreme Court of Canada, which turned on the question of whether pretending to do a magic act where women were sawed in half was an act which was sexual in nature.

Strategic Incapacitation: Toronto Police and Protests

Toronto police protests Strategic Incapacitation Legal Observers Canada Palestine solidarity Orange Hats brutality violence assault

Two Toronto based Legal Observers from the Orange Hats (https://orangehats.noblogs.org/main-pages/meet-the-orange-hats/)  return to give us details on the tactics Toronto Police are using to try to bring down the Palestinian Solidarity Movement.

Tasked with keeping an eye on cops during protests and other actions, Gisela and Leon have lots of stories to tell. Together the group recently issued a 2025 Year-In-Review (https://orangehats.noblogs.org/general/orange-hats-2025-report-on-toronto-police-service-conduct-at-protests/)  on Toronto Police Services conduct at protests. The report includes statistics on injuries and arrests; it warns of trends in policing; and it points to a clear strategy to suppress the activities of activists - and legal observers.

Its not all bad news. Thanks to their experience, the Orange Hats are a great source of advice for organizers and activists - or anyone coming into contact with Police.

The Imperial Boomerang: How Colonial Tactics Come Home

Israel Venezuela Latin America ICE militarized police brutality fascism dictatorships Zionism

In October 2023, Craig Mokhiber resigned as director of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights over the UN’s failure to act to stop the genocide in Gaza. Since then, he has been writing and speaking out about Israel’s crimes in Gaza as well as the other wars launched by the US-Israel Axis. This week, we’re focusing on Israel’s secret role in destabilizing Latin America, the Maduro government in Venezuela in particular, and in training ICE.

Useful Idiots: Can you talk about the Israeli regime’s nefarious role in Latin America?

Craig Mokhiber: It’s a long story, the history of the Israeli regime supporting far-right governments and death squads in Latin America and attacking or supporting attacks on progressive governments and movements in the region. And that’s why in her first address after the U.S. attacked Venezuela, the vice president, who’s now the interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, said that the attack on the country had “Zionist undertones.”

People of the region are well aware that the hand of the Israeli regime in destabilizing progressive governments has been going on forever. We’re talking about Israeli weapons, Israeli equipment, Israeli surveillance technology, Israeli intelligence cooperation, spying on opposition, and so on. But what’s really sometimes missed in these conversations is that the Israeli regime has been exporting not just weapons and technology and tactics, but it also exports a kind of violent and racist ideology. Ideas that are very right-wing, very Zionist, very militarist, very anti-human rights, obviously deeply anti-Muslim and anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian and anti-left, and this general idea that tries to frame law enforcement as equivalent to military.

That has been a big part of it. And that’s why, after the attack by the US on Venezuela, Israeli regime leaders were absolutely giddy celebrating the attacks on Venezuela and the abduction of the Venezuelan president.

Useful Idiots: What about Israel’s role in U.S. crackdowns against its own citizens?

Craig Mokhiber: This is what I refer to as the Zionist boomerang. This support for Zionism, fascism, apartheid, all of the crimes of the Israeli regime in Palestine, now it’s come back to our own cities. We’re talking about policing tactics that are entirely inconsistent with international human rights standards. You’ve got decades of the US underwriting apartheid, surveillance, repression, and genocide in Palestine. Those practices are now being brought home.

We’ve seen it in the brutal persecution of student protesters. You see it in the distortion of US legislation by Israel. The official adoption of the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism as an Israeli tool to try to silence dissent about Israeli abuses. You see it in the wholesale suspension of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution in the U.S. on behalf of the Israeli regime.

This is blowback from support for Zionism in Western Asia and you now see it in the corruption of U.S. law enforcement with this continuous structured flow of Israeli weapons and equipment and surveillance technology. A lot of these things come out of Israel’s so-called counterterrorism tactics. And whenever you hear that word counterterrorism, I think we’ve all learned, human rights runs for cover. It’s surveillance, it’s brutal crowd control techniques, racial profiling, intrusive intelligence gathering that’s now touching all of us.

That is a product of this Zionist boomerang. And that alone should terrify everybody who lives in the United States.

In this episode of the Remnant Underground, Michael speaks on immigration law enforcement in his home state of Minnesota. As President Trump sends his Border Czar Tom Homan to Minneapolis, Michael applauds the effort to lower the temperature and do this job without empowering the Left to score massive political points in this midterm election year.

Plus, Michael looks at why so many illegal immigrants embarked on the desperate journey in the first place. Why are so many of their now-Socialist countries virtually uninhabitable for them? What role does the Spirit of Vatican II play in all this?

When Joe "the Catholic" Biden opened up the southern border, why did the American Catholic bishops take billions in federal aid to encourage immigrants to come to this country? And what is the traditional Catholic response to all this? (Father Robert Altier — a traditional Catholic priest — weighs in.)

Finally, the police state — what is it, what role does Israel/Mossad play, and how could aggressive immigration reform bring it about?

Canadians In ICE? Neither Canada Nor U.S. Keeps Track

Canada ICE immigration paramilitary fascism brutality murder security accountability justice

“It’s in our interest to know what citizens are doing, but it’s also in our interest in terms of national security and public security.”

Neither the Canadian government nor the United States Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) agency keeps track of how many Canadians might be employed as ICE agents, according to government statements.

An international human rights lawyer says that’s a problem, and is calling on the Canadian government to require citizens serving in any foreign military or law enforcement agency to first obtain permission to do so, and then be interrogated when they return to Canada.

Mark Kersten, an expert in international law and a professor at the University of Fraser Valley, told The Maple: “It’s in our interest to know what citizens are doing, but it’s also in our interest in terms of national security and public security.”

“If there are people engaged in a paramilitary branch of the United States, of the Trump administration, and potentially committing crimes or engaging in criminal conduct, it’s critically important that the Canadian government know about that.”

ICE, which serves as the vanguard of President Donald Trump’s brutal roundup of immigrants, has come under increasing scrutiny after federal agents recently shot and killed two American citizens in Minneapolis.  (more...)

Following Davos and Brutal ICE Operations: Crossing the Lines

ICE politics IDF lawlessness police brutality intimidation violence federal agents fascism

In today’s EIR Report, Harley Schlanger interviews veteran radio and TV political analyst Garland Nixon on developments following the annual Davos summit, including the increasingly brutal ICE operations in Minnesota, the shift away from the Trump Administration’s “no new wars” stance to neocon-backed interventions in Venezuela and Iran, and the role of British imperial strategy in shaping U.S. foreign policy—using NATO, financial power, and proxy conflicts to prevent Eurasian economic integration and weaken Russia and China.

Nixon pointed out that the expanded ICE deployments have drawn major political backlash from within the U.S., including some pro-gun Trump supporters who have highlighted that Alex Pretti was following the law with respect to carrying a concealed firearm. ICE agents have increasingly used intimidation, physical force, and violence against civilians, including U.S. citizens. Nixon, a former law enforcement official, points out that some of the federal agents have received training directly from the Israel Defense Forces, turning counterterror and foreign-war tactics against their own fellow Americans.

Many Americans now see that this is no longer about “combatting illegal immigration,” but empowering a post-9/11 surveillance apparatus—run by Palantir CEO Alex Karp, Peter Thiel, and others—to be used to suppress political dissent and protest at home. This has also been applied to social media platforms, like X and TikTok, to censor any kind of discussion criticizing the government for its policies in Gaza, Ukraine, and other nations. Younger Americans, including those from Jewish communities, have increasingly turned against U.S. support for the  Israeli government’s militarist Zionist ideology. The issue is much deeper though, as both Schlanger and Nixon get into, which is the role of British imperialism in creating destructive ideologies like Zionism to maintain a geopolitical stranglehold on the world. The intervention from Bush-RINOS and neocons in the Trump Administration to provoke a war in Iran, for example, is being done with the intent to weaken Russia and China.

All of this relates to the collapsing global financial system, which the swindlers are desperate to save. Increased military spending in the U.S., AI investment, repeated bailouts, and more endless wars are the present measures being taken to sustain the failing speculative economy. This will not work, however, as reality cannot be defied. A very dangerous moment presents itself, but at the same an opportunity exists for citizens to expose the underlying structures of financial power and oligarchism at its core, and present a new alternative based on cooperation, mutual benefit, and economic development.

Ontario Solicitor General Calls for Heavier Policing of Palestine Protests While Charges Keep Dropping

Canada Toronto police Ontario solicitor general protests Palestine solidarity indigenous repression

Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters have been detained, arrested or charged since October 2023. Only two have been convicted, while most have charges withdrawn, stayed or discharged.

In late December, Ontario Solicitor General Michael Kerzner sent a letter to the Toronto Police Service (TPS) calling for a crackdown on what he described as “hate, intimidation and harassment-motivated offences.” In the letter, Kerzner specifically cited Palestine solidarity demonstrations, describing a peaceful demonstration inside the Eaton Centre as a “mob intimidation and harassment,” and denouncing protests near Bathurst and Sheppard.

In response, TPS Chief Myron Demkiw highlighted the fact that police have arrested more than 460 people and laid more than 1,000 charges related to protests and potentially hate-motivated offenses over the past two years.

Legal experts worry that this type of pressure will encourage TPS to further criminalize protest movements and limit civil liberties. “Any left-wing protest is packed to the brim with police ready to brutalize and harass participants,” criminal defence lawyer Matthew Campbell-Williams told The Grind. He describes Kerzner’s letter as “ridiculous,” pointing out that the vast majority of the charges laid against protesters at Palestine or Indigenous solidarity rallies have not been held up in court. “The reason is very clear: they are criminalizing protests with bogus charges to scare people from speaking up,” Campbell-Williams says.  (more...)

Decaying empires turn to savage control previously used abroad at home: Chris Hedges

Donald Trump empire decay savagery blowback domestic brutality police ICE tyranny censorship silencing intimidation

Renowned American journalist Chris Hedges has linked the US government’s terror tactics in clamping down on opposition to the United States decline and decaying status as a modern-day empire.

“Empires, when they decay, employ the savage forms of control on those they subjugate abroad, or those demonized by the wider society in the name of law and order, on the homeland,” the Pulitzer-winning veteran journalist wrote on X on Sunday.

It came hours after US federal agents shot and killed another citizen in Minneapolis, amid a massive crackdown on protests in the city.

Minneapolis Police Department Chief Brian O’Hara said that a 37-year-old man died in hospital on Saturday after being shot multiple times.

The man’s parents identified him as Alex Pretti, an intensive care unit nurse who was a Minneapolis resident and a US citizen.

Hedges compared the recent “murders” committed by US federal government forces in the US homeland to those carried out by the “American execution squads” killing of Afghans and Iraqis abroad.

“The murders of unarmed civilians on the streets of Minneapolis, including the killing today of the intensive-care nurse Alex Jeffrey Pretti, would not come as a shock to Iraqis in Fallujah or Afghans in Helmand province,” he wrote. “They were terrorized by heavily armed American execution squads for decades.”

“It would not come as a shock to any of the students I teach in prison. Militarized police in poor urban neighborhoods kick down doors without warrants and kill with the same impunity and lack of accountability,” he added.  (more...)

Unions and students seek Columbia University board reforms after Trump deal

Activists want a board of trustees that is more transparent and representative of the students and faculty

Students and Columbia University's chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) launched a campaign on Tuesday to reform the institution’s most powerful governing body, the board of trustees.

The decision comes after more than two years of what they say is disenfranchisement over the way Columbia's board of trustees has handled several issues, including permitting the police to target the student body multiple times while they were protesting against Israel’s war on Gaza and capitulating to the Trump administration’s demands over alleged violations of federal anti-discrimination laws.

While the encampments inspired other students at campuses across the country to protest, pro-Palestine students at Columbia paid a heavy price. Hundreds of students were arrested, dozens suspended, and several targeted for deportation. Activists say those actions have had a chilling effect on free speech on campus.

Michael Thaddeus, a mathematics professor and vice-president of Columbia's chapter of AAUP, told Middle East Eye that the idea to reform the board arose last summer, following the maelstrom and Columbia's agreement to a $220m settlement with the Trump administration for alleged violations of federal anti-discrimination laws.

AAUP had discussions with students, alumni, and community members, and a strategy to reform the board came up repeatedly.

Thaddeus said, “There are many things that we’re deeply, deeply unhappy about. One of them is the decision to call the police in response to the encampments, the occupation of Hamilton Hall and the demonstration in Butler Library in May of 2025.

“We're deeply unhappy with the decision to negotiate with the federal government rather than fighting their demands the way Harvard did. Columbia more or less acquiesced to those demands and made unprecedented concessions to the government on matters of hiring, curriculum, discipline and admissions. That was a deeply misguided decision," he added.  (more...)
