Despite repression and retaliation, the Gaza genocide has pushed an unprecedented wave of artists across the entertainment industry to back the cultural boycott of Israel.
In recent months, a wave of artists throughout the entertainment industry has begun speaking out against Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
On September 8, more than 1,200 film workers — including A-list stars like Olivia Colman, Tilda Swinton, and Riz Ahmed — publicly pledged to refuse any work with Israeli film companies that are “implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people.” Since September, thousands more filmworkers have signed onto the pledge, with the number of signatories now exceeding 5,000.
“Both the language of this pledge, which echoes the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement’s emphasis on institutional complicity, and its material commitment to reject offers to work with nearly all Israeli film companies, represent a significant shift for a film world dominated by executives who have either remained silent about or vocally supported Israel’s genocide in Gaza for the past two years. This shift is not simply a result of growing concern about the horrific suffering Israel continues to inflict upon the Palestinian people. Rather, it is the result of two years of tireless organizing led by two rank-and-file formations in the film and entertainment industry: Filmworkers for Palestine and Entertainment Labor for Palestine. In the face of repression and retaliation, FWP and EL4P have built a movement in solidarity with Palestine in the arts that they believe will last long after the genocide in Gaza is over. (more...)
As solidarity with Palestine grows, thousands of film workers pledge to end complicity with genocide
The Louis D. Brandeis Center is a nonprofit founded by former Trump official Kenneth Marcus that aims to stifle criticism of Israel via lawfare.
Earlier this month, the organization threatened to sue the group Film Workers For Palestine for boycotting Israeli film institutions.
In a letter, which was sent to studios, distributors, talent agencies, and film festivals, the organization claims that endorsing an Israel boycott could lead to legal consequences.
“Boycotting Jews isn’t an original idea, or, thankfully, a legal one in the United States of America,” said Brandeis Center Director of Corporate Initiatives and Senior Counsel Rory Lancman in a statement. “We caution Hollywood decision makers against submitting to pressure to effectuate this blatantly illegal blacklist of Jewish Israeli artists and institutions. As we say in our letter, we much prefer to see their work on the screen, and not them in court.” (more...)
Brandeis Center threatens to sue film workers over Israel boycott
Films challenging dominant Zionist narratives have long faced bans, funding cuts, and smear campaigns from Israeli officials and right-wing activists alike.
A pledge to boycott Israeli film institutions has quickly racked up the signatures of over 4,500 actors, directors, and other film workers from around the world. Launched on Sept. 8 by the group Film Workers for Palestine, the pledge commits signatories — who include Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix, Javier Bardem, and Ilana Glazer — not to work with Israeli production companies, broadcasters, cinemas, or festivals deemed to be complicit in apartheid and the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Hitting back, Israeli Culture Minister Miki Zohar described the boycott as “cynical and detached,” vowing that “Israeli film culture will continue to flourish, touch hearts, and succeed around the world.” Yet in truth, many Israeli filmmakers and institutions have already been facing boycotts and attempts at silencing for a long time — from the Israeli government itself.
Just last week, Zohar announced that he was pulling funding from the Ophir Awards, Israel’s equivalent of the Oscars. This was after the top prize went to Shai Carmeli-Pollak’s “The Sea,” which tells the story of a 12-year-old Palestinian boy from the West Bank who tries to visit the beach for the first time but is stopped at an Israeli military checkpoint.
“Starting with the 2026 budget, this pathetic ceremony will no longer be funded by taxpayers’ money,” Zohar declared. “Under my watch, Israeli citizens will not pay from their pockets for a ceremony that spits in the faces of our heroic soldiers.”
This was only the latest in a long history of right-wing attempts to silence critical Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers, which has ramped up steadily over the past two decades, particularly vis-a-vis documentaries that challenge the dominant Zionist narrative. While these films rarely achieve commercial success, their impact has been amplified through earning recognition at some of the world’s most prestigious cinematic venues — from Berlinale, Sundance, and Venice, to the Peabodys, Emmys, and Oscars. How to get into the 0.000001%
How does one join the dizzying heights of the elite? Not the 10%, the 2%, or the 1% of professional or business success, but the billionaire class, the House of Representatives, Governor of a major state or mayor of New York City? Is it by proving your merit in school, a bit of good luck, perhaps a grinding mindset as aspirants are taught to hope? Or by family connection and bloodline, as those doomed to fail may fear?
Certainly it’s the latter. But there is a missing ingredient that aspirants should know before they set out to try to join this genocidal Western club.
In the book Codes of the Underworld: How Criminals Communicate, Italian political scientist Diego Gambetta talks about how in certain circumstances it is rational for subordinates (say, enforcers who are collecting extortion money from businesses) to display to their superiors how incompetent they are (at, for example, actually running a business). This is a display of loyalty: an incompetent subordinate can only survive at the boss’s whim, and is therefore going to be loyal. Taking some irreversible action can also show loyalty: the importance of tattoos to criminal organizations is an example. Getting a specific tattoo permanently affiliates a criminal with others in the group, a valuable display of loyalty.

...George Hodel was a prominent Jewish physician with a genius level IQ, working in Hollywood in the 1940s. His father was born George Goldgefter in Odessa in 1873. Goldgefter changed his name to Hodel, married a Jewish woman in Paris, and moved to America, where George Hodel, Jr. was born.
George Jr. was a child prodigy, playing piano concerts at the age of nine and graduating from high school at the age of fourteen. He would grow up to up to be a womanizer, child molester, and murderer. It's a story with an amazing cast of characters.
There's beautiful Eurasian Kiyo, left, the astrologer to the stars. Young Steve Hodel met Kiyo when he was in his early 20s, fell in love, and married her. She told him she was 28, and looked it. Turns out she was actually in her 40s. She'd had an affair with Steve's father, George Hodel, when she was twenty-years-old. George dumped her, so she married his son Steve decades later as a means of revenge. It's likely that at the time Kiyo married Steve, she knew that the elder Hodel was the Black Dahlia killer.
There's Tamar Hodel, a teen temptress and Marilyn Monroe lookalike, and the daughter of George Hodel. He took nude pictures of her when she was thirteen, molested and impregnated her when she was fourteen, and then forced her to have an abortion. She ran away from home. When the cops found her, she told them what her father had done and a trial took place. Despite numerous witnesses who corroborated Tamar's story, George's lawyers ripped her to pieces on the witness stand and George was acquitted. After the trial, George immediately fled the country.
There's John Huston, the famous movie director and an avowed sadist. He, too, plays a part in the proceedings. He tried to rape Tamar Hodel when she was eleven, and he had an affair with one of George's many wives. In fact, he's rumored to be the father of one of Steve Hodel's brothers.
