Is the right-wing media world...okay?

Canada racism white supremacy nationalism re-migration xenophobia Dominion Society bigotry immigration media

The girls were fighting this week.

See, Juno “News,” a right wing self-proclaimed “news” outlet that for some reason boasts one of the highest politics Substack subscription rates in Canada, decided to platform an interesting guest.

Host Candice Malcolm called it an “immigration debate.”

But her guest was a guy named Daniel Tyrie, a founder of the “Dominion Society.”

This is a guy who, according to the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, is a part of Canada’s growing and emboldened white nationalist movement.

Even Malcolm’s former boss, former Conservative cabinet minister and former Alberta premier Jason Kenney, was outspoken about his disgust for the interview.

“Daniel Tyrie is a racist,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Racism is immoral. It is poison. It is not “vitality.” It is not conservative.”

This left many Canadians feeling nervous, because…did we just agree with Jason Kenney?

Anyway, this is part of a broader, long overdue conversation about the conservative media ecosystem.

Because things aren’t just getting weird on Juno News, a platform Pierre Poilievre has generously sat down with several times for one on one interviews.

The party also invited several conservative “influencers” to their convention, which launched a bigger conversation about these TikTok-making, sometimes truth-twisting and often very partisan people who are making up an increasingly large share of the right-wing media ecosystem.

I knew I wanted to talk about all of this, and who better to help me than one of my favourite fellow political journalists?

Luke LeBrun is the Editor of PressProgress. He’s an award winning journalist and very, very good at what he does. He’s also covered a lot of stories that veer into the stranger side of our media industry, from this recent Juno News drama to uncovering the Israeli government money backing a group sending right-wing media personalities to Israel.

In fact, he’s so good, that he’s facing a big money lawsuit alongside CBC News and the Toronto Star that could create chilling precedents that would protect politicians’ secrets from whistleblowers.

Jason Kenney is Sounding Off at the Right-Wing Website Juno News for Platforming a White Nationalist

How a white nationalist is causing a rift between Alberta's former premier and a right-wing alt-media outlet run by his own former spokesperson

The right-wing alternative media outlet Juno News is coming under fire from an unexpected media critic – former Alberta premier Jason Kenney.

Juno News, a spinoff media brand that is separate but associated with the right-wing outlet True North, is facing an online backlash from prominent conservative figures  after hosting a white nationalist guest on a video podcast this week.

On Family Day, Candice Malcolm, the founder of Juno News, was joined by Daniel Tyrie, the former executive director of  the Peoples’ Party of Canada who now heads an organization called the Dominion Society. which is advocating for the forced mass deportation of several million people from Canada.

Tyrie’s organization refers to this idea as “remigration,” which they define on their website as “the return of foreigners to their respective homelands.”

Tyrie and his group also staged an anti-immigrant protest outside the Conservative convention in Calgary last month featuring photos mocking Pierre Poilievre for wearing a Sikh head covering.  (more...)

Back to SAVAK days: Pahlavi monarchist violence surges against diaspora opponents

Iran diaspora SAVAK Pahlavi monarchists Israel Canada Germany violence crime extremism impunity

Across major Western cities – from the quieter neighborhoods of Europe to the crowded boulevards of Los Angeles – reports have surfaced of the campaigns of violence and intimidation linked to pro-Pahlavi monarchist groups targeting critics within the diaspora.

The most recent cases involve the killing of an Iranian national in Canada and the fatal stabbing of an Afghan businessman in Germany – incidents directly linked to Pahlavi monarchist supporters.

These cases have reignited debate online about the conduct of hardline monarchist circles, who advocate “regime change” in the Islamic Republic of Iran and have grown increasingly intolerant of dissent, responding aggressively to voices critical of their rhetoric or political activities.

For decades, the Iranian diaspora in North America and Europe has been a space marked by virulent political debate and ideological division following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

In recent years, however, some activists and community members say that political rivalry has, at times, escalated into harassment and physical violence.

Reports from several Western countries describe incidents involving supporters of Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran’s deposed monarch, engaging in aggressive and very often violent tactics against those perceived as critics or dissenters.

Documented cases include physical altercations at protests, confrontations outside community events, and coordinated online harassment campaigns. Some business owners and students have also reported threats or pressure linked to their political positions.

Observers who spoke to the Press TV website noted that the pattern suggests more than spontaneous clashes between rival demonstrators.

They contend that certain groups with the so-called Iranian “opposition” operate in an organized manner, seeking to suppress and isolate those who show signs of disillusionment with their movement, which has increasingly turned violent and unpopular over the years.

Some frame these incidents as part of broader tensions surrounding West Asian politics, particularly in the wake of the Gaza genocide, which has sharply polarized communities worldwide.

Following the outbreak of the Gaza war, monarchist groups became increasingly visible at pro-Israel rallies in several Western capitals, which suggests the involvement of Israeli spy agencies in the violent activities of pro-Pahlavi groups in the West.  (more...)

Canada Should Release Nazi War Criminal Report

Canada immigration Nazi war criminals ratlines cover-up history Germany Ukraine Trudeau Deschenes

It is long past time for the Canadian government to release the final report of the Commission of Inquiry On War Criminals In Canada.

The commission, whose mandate was to deal with the explosive issue of suspected Nazi war criminals admitted into Canada, was chaired by Jules Deschenes, a retired Quebec Superior Court judge.

He released the first part of the report in 1986, but classified the second section, which contains a list of suspected war criminals allowed into Canada after World War II.

The classified segment is stored in the vaults of Library and Archives Canada (LAC), which last year refused to release it on the grounds that it could damage Canada’s relationship with foreign countries, further tarnish the names of individuals whose alleged crimes were never proven in court, and furnish Russia with material to vilify the Ukrainian-Canadian community.

LAC’s reasoning is supported by the Access to Information Act, which states that Canadian institutions can refuse to release data that could undermine Canada’s national interests.

Recently, the office of the Information Commissioner informed The Globe and Mail newspaper that it accepted LAC’s rationale for keeping the second half of the report under lock and key.

LAC’s argument rests on thin ice because a University of California historian named Jared McBride, an expert on war crimes, has already examined an annotated and redacted version of the secret list. The Information Commissioner acknowledges that McBride’s request was granted several years ago.

Among the names on the list were Helmut Oberlander, a member of an Einsatzgruppen killing squad during Nazi Germany’ military campaign in the Soviet Union, and Volodymyr Kubiovych, a Ukrainian instrumental in the formation of the SS Galicia division in the German army. Kubiovych died in the mid-1980s. Oberlander passed away in 2021.

Particularly in light of McBride’s success in gaining access to the classified report, the Canadian government should declassify and release it, says Richard Evans, an authority on Nazi Germany.  (more...)

Irish politicians slam US deportation flights to 'Israel' via Shannon

Ireland Shannon Airport ICE deportations Palestine immigration

Irish lawmakers condemn the use of Shannon Airport by ICE for deportation flights sending Palestinians from the US to "Israel" aboard a Trump donor’s private jet.

Several Irish politicians have condemned the use of Shannon Airport by private jets chartered for US deportation flights to "Israel", calling the practice “reprehensible” and demanding government intervention.

Two separate deportation flights organized by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made fuel stops at the Irish airport on January 21 and February 1, according to a Guardian investigation. Both flights carried Palestinians who were reportedly deported from the US to "Israel".

The aircraft used was a private jet owned by Gil Dezer, a real estate developer and known donor to US President Donald Trump. Dezer's company has built several Trump-branded properties in Miami.

Some deportees said they were shackled by the wrists and ankles throughout the flight. Upon arrival in Tel Aviv, they were reportedly taken to the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Dezer claimed he was unaware of the passengers’ identities or the purpose of the flights, stating that he is only notified of dates when his aircraft is in use. The jet was chartered by Journey Aviation, a Florida-based company frequently contracted by US authorities.  (more...)

A MINNESOTA STANDOFF: Trump vs. the Progressive Catholic Push for Open Borders

Minnesota ICE immigration brutality unaccountability fascism racism lawlessness authoritarianism Israel Mossad surveillance

In this episode of the Remnant Underground, Michael speaks on immigration law enforcement in his home state of Minnesota. As President Trump sends his Border Czar Tom Homan to Minneapolis, Michael applauds the effort to lower the temperature and do this job without empowering the Left to score massive political points in this midterm election year.

Plus, Michael looks at why so many illegal immigrants embarked on the desperate journey in the first place. Why are so many of their now-Socialist countries virtually uninhabitable for them? What role does the Spirit of Vatican II play in all this?

When Joe "the Catholic" Biden opened up the southern border, why did the American Catholic bishops take billions in federal aid to encourage immigrants to come to this country? And what is the traditional Catholic response to all this? (Father Robert Altier — a traditional Catholic priest — weighs in.)

Finally, the police state — what is it, what role does Israel/Mossad play, and how could aggressive immigration reform bring it about?

The Rise of Anti-Immigrant Racism Led to Violent Attacks and Silence in London Community

Canada London immigration racism white supremacy bigotry hate discrimination violence silence

On January 18, a group of South Asian youth from the Malayali community were targeted and attacked in Victoria Park. This racist violence seriously injured four of them, including one suffering a critical eye injury. They are workers in the London community, having recently graduated as international students from local post-secondary education.

The London Police didn’t release a media statement for public safety.

Only days after the attacks, upon seeing statements by London Malayali cultural groups raising community safety concerns, did anyone from the wider community respond.

Both the racist attacks and the following silence are symptoms of anti-immigrant racism.

‘Fascism’ originated as a term in Italy to describe Mussolini’s rule. It is not synonymous with an authoritarian state or dictatorship, and while it can get used as short-hand to describe the far-right, it can also be watered down when lobbed without basis. Fascism is a mass movement, but behind the small business owners, underclass, and even workers themselves, the interests of large capitalist powers are ultimately served.

It is only once power is fully consolidated do we end up with a fascist state like Nazi Germany. The United States under Trump with its imperialist aggression abroad and domestic repression at home is making a run for it. We are not even one month into 2026 and already have seen the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Cilia Flores, threats of military aggression in Iran, Greenland, Colombia, and Cuba, and the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by ICE. But the mass struggles against these also show that the state does not have full control.  (more...)

Canadians In ICE? Neither Canada Nor U.S. Keeps Track

Canada ICE immigration paramilitary fascism brutality murder security accountability justice

“It’s in our interest to know what citizens are doing, but it’s also in our interest in terms of national security and public security.”

Neither the Canadian government nor the United States Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) agency keeps track of how many Canadians might be employed as ICE agents, according to government statements.

An international human rights lawyer says that’s a problem, and is calling on the Canadian government to require citizens serving in any foreign military or law enforcement agency to first obtain permission to do so, and then be interrogated when they return to Canada.

Mark Kersten, an expert in international law and a professor at the University of Fraser Valley, told The Maple: “It’s in our interest to know what citizens are doing, but it’s also in our interest in terms of national security and public security.”

“If there are people engaged in a paramilitary branch of the United States, of the Trump administration, and potentially committing crimes or engaging in criminal conduct, it’s critically important that the Canadian government know about that.”

ICE, which serves as the vanguard of President Donald Trump’s brutal roundup of immigrants, has come under increasing scrutiny after federal agents recently shot and killed two American citizens in Minneapolis.  (more...)

The rise of the far right is often discussed as a European or American issue, but Canada is rarely part of the conversation.

In this episode of Real Talk, independent journalist Rachel Gilmore joins Mohamed Hashem to discuss the growing ecosystem of white nationalist groups in Canada, including the rise of so-called ‘Active Clubs’.

The Canadian Anti-Hate Network now warns that the white nationalist movement in Canada has never been larger or more dangerous.

Gilmore also speaks about the personal cost of reporting on the far right in Canada, from online harassment and threats to having her live location shared.

These Canadian companies are making MONEY off of ICE and Trump's violent mass deportation regime

Canada business ICE immigration profiteering Trump violence brutality

The Trump administration’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) thugs are completely out of control — and there are Canadian companies who are profiting from this vicious agency.

After ICE gunned down yet another person for the crime of standing up to their abuses, I got angry. When I get angry, I research. So I tracked down Canadian companies who have open or recent contracts with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security — in other words, the Canadians pocketing profits from this mass deportation campaign.

Several of these companies used the U.S. branches of their companies as their listed address on the USASpending website, which hid them from maps circulating that plot Canadian companies profiting from ICE’s cruelty.

Here they are.

ICE nodding to far-right extremists in recruitment posts, experts say

U.S. immigration enforcement agency memes look familiar to far-right groups

At first glance, there may not appear to be anything unusual about the social media posts that are part of the ongoing recruitment drive by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The posts, which encourage Americans to join ICE, use the same aggressively patriotic imagery that’s become a hallmark of the Trump administration’s online communications.

But to observers of the far-right, and to members of the far-right themselves, there is something else that is recognizable in the language of the posts.

"I would describe it as oddly very familiar as someone who has been looking at the white nationalist and neo-Nazi movement for nearly a decade now," said Hannah Gais, a senior research analyst with the Southern Poverty Law Centre, a non-profit that monitors right-wing extremism.

"It's disturbing to see that coming from a government agency."

Gais is among several U.S. experts tracking a series of references in the ICE recruitment posts that, while obscure to most, seem to be winking to extremists.

That’s raised the question: Who, exactly, is ICE trying to recruit?  (more...)

US bishops urge ‘respect for life’ as anger swells over ICE killings in Minneapolis

Catholic bishops Minneapolis ICE killings immigration clergy racism white supremacy brutality intimidation

US Catholic bishops have urged restraint, peace, and respect for human life after federal immigration agents shot and killed two American citizens in Minneapolis this month.

The latest killing occurred on Saturday, when US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers fatally shot 37-year-old Alex Pretti during an encounter on a Minneapolis street.

ICE later alleged Pretti was armed and intervened as agents approached a woman. But footage captured at the scene tells a sharply different story: Pretti is seen holding a phone, not a gun, as he appears to assist other demonstrators moments before being shot.

Local authorities also confirmed that Pretti, who was a nurse, held a valid permit to carry a handgun in public and that his firearm was legally registered.

Pretti’s death heightened tensions in the US  city, where fear and anger were already running high following the killing of 37‑year‑old mother Renee Good by a federal immigration agent just weeks earlier.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Minneapolis on Sunday, and several vigils were held for Pretti over the weekend.  (more...)

Decaying empires turn to savage control previously used abroad at home: Chris Hedges

Donald Trump empire decay savagery blowback domestic brutality police ICE tyranny censorship silencing intimidation

Renowned American journalist Chris Hedges has linked the US government’s terror tactics in clamping down on opposition to the United States decline and decaying status as a modern-day empire.

“Empires, when they decay, employ the savage forms of control on those they subjugate abroad, or those demonized by the wider society in the name of law and order, on the homeland,” the Pulitzer-winning veteran journalist wrote on X on Sunday.

It came hours after US federal agents shot and killed another citizen in Minneapolis, amid a massive crackdown on protests in the city.

Minneapolis Police Department Chief Brian O’Hara said that a 37-year-old man died in hospital on Saturday after being shot multiple times.

The man’s parents identified him as Alex Pretti, an intensive care unit nurse who was a Minneapolis resident and a US citizen.

Hedges compared the recent “murders” committed by US federal government forces in the US homeland to those carried out by the “American execution squads” killing of Afghans and Iraqis abroad.

“The murders of unarmed civilians on the streets of Minneapolis, including the killing today of the intensive-care nurse Alex Jeffrey Pretti, would not come as a shock to Iraqis in Fallujah or Afghans in Helmand province,” he wrote. “They were terrorized by heavily armed American execution squads for decades.”

“It would not come as a shock to any of the students I teach in prison. Militarized police in poor urban neighborhoods kick down doors without warrants and kill with the same impunity and lack of accountability,” he added.  (more...)

Counter protesters criticize TPS actions at the demonstration

On January 10 at 1:00 pm, anti-immigrant protesters gathered at Nathan Phillips Square before marching through downtown Toronto to the Eaton Centre, drawing a strong counter-protest and police presence. During the protest and counter-protest, Toronto Police Service (TPS) arrested eight individuals, three of whom were charged with assaulting a peace officer.

Anti-immigrant demonstrators held signs that read “Make Canada Great Again” and “Stop the invasion” as families spent the Saturday afternoon skating on the rink next to the demonstration. A substantially larger group of counter-protesters was also present, chanting “Go home losers, go home racists,” and “shame!”

TPS presence at the demonstration was extensive, with more than 10 squad cars parked along Queen Street West. At Nathan Phillips Square, over 20 officers formed a barricade to contain counter-protesters. No similar measures were taken to contain the anti-immigrant demonstrators.

Around 2:00 pm, the anti-immigrant group began its march toward the Eaton Centre, which lasted more than two hours. Counter-protesters followed in opposition. TPS officers accompanied the march and blocked traffic at Dundas Street West and parts of Yonge Street to keep the march moving.

Members of the Canada First group carried Canadian flags and banners with slogans such as “fit in or fuck off” and “we need some Canadian ICE,” and some chanted calls for “quality immigrants only.”

Onlookers and counter-protesters shouted back, with some identifying themselves as immigrants and accusing the protesters of spreading hateful and exclusionary messages.  (more...)

Canadians Cash In While America Burns

Canada U.S. America Aligator Alcatraz GardaWorld Roshel CGI oppression fascism

It’s easy to sit in judgement of the U.S., but Canada has enabled, and even profited from, the rise of American fascism.

What role is Canada playing in the United States’ fascist turn?

The Department of Homeland Security rounds up hundreds of migrants a day, throwing them in cages operated by the Canadian security firm GardaWorld.

As ICE agents sow terror in cities across the U.S., the Ontario manufacturer Roshel supplies them with armoured vehicles to facilitate their work.

While ICE saw its budget balloon to $75 billion last year, the Montreal-based CGI Inc. helped the agency manage its sprawling technology needs from offices in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia.

And just days after the U.S. military abducted a sovereign head of state, Canadian politicians boasted about the coup creating opportunities for Alberta oil in Asian markets.

Everywhere you see American imperialism ruining lives, you’ll find unscrupulous Canadians cashing in. Our political class would rather we not acknowledge this reality, that we continue to fall for slogans like “elbows up” without actually considering the degree to which our economy has been absorbed by U.S. interests.  (more...)

Zelensky appoints descendant of Nazi collaborator as economic adviser

Chrystia Freeland Ukraine Canada Nazi ratlines immigration Bandera politics collaboration

Canadian-born Chrystia Freeland’s grandfather served as editor-in-chief of a newspaper that published Nazi propaganda in occupied Poland and Austria during World War II

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has appointed Chrystia Freeland, a Canadian-born descendant of a documented Nazi collaborator, as his economic development adviser.

Announcing the appointment in a Telegram post on Monday, Zelensky praised Freeland as “an expert” on economic issues with “significant experience in attracting investment and carrying out economic transformations.”

Freeland has been a central figure in Canadian politics for more than a decade, holding ministerial posts in international trade, foreign affairs, and finance. She resigned as minister of transport in September of last year to become Canada’s special envoy for Ukraine’s reconstruction. Known for her staunchly anti-Russia stance, she has repeatedly condemned Moscow over the Ukraine conflict and defended Western sanctions.

Freeland has a well documented and controversial family legacy. Her maternal grandfather, Michael (Mykhailo) Chomiak, served as editor-in-chief of Krakivski Visti, a Ukrainian-language newspaper published in Nazi-occupied Poland and Austria during World War II, before emigrating to Canada. Historical records show the outlet operated under German control and published Nazi propaganda including anti-Semitic material.

Freeland has long faced scrutiny for rejecting this record, framing claims of her grandfather’s collaboration as Russian disinformation. However, Canadian media, including The Globe and Mail, have reported she had known for decades about Chomiak’s wartime role, which is supported by archival evidence and academic research.  (more...)

Fighting fascism in America during a genocide in Palestine

America fascism Gaza genocide Palestine ICE deportations prison arrests resistance

We must insist on drawing connections across time and place — from the Holocaust to Gaza, or ICE detention to Israeli prisons — to disrupt the normalization of authoritarianism at every turn.

“These times make me think of 1933,” my neighbor commented as our sons zoomed down a hill on their bikes. This was a common sentiment in the early months of President Donald Trump’s second term — how to stop a leader with fascist tendencies who had gained power through a democratic process.

But it wasn’t our usual neighborhood conversation. Rümeysa Öztürk, a graduate student at Tufts University, where I teach, had recently been kidnapped by masked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents for writing an op-ed in our student newspaper in support of Palestinian rights and student governance. The alarming video of the incident had left us all shaken.

My neighbor explained that his great-grandparents had come to the United States from Europe in the decades before the Holocaust. But other branches of his Jewish family had stayed and were entirely wiped out. This time, he expected, my publicly Palestinian family was more at risk than his. I think I nodded blandly. For many months, my mind had been with Palestinians in Gaza, where a genocide was underway. His concern for my family seemed to me both alarming and abstract.

Another friend had been encouraging me, for the sake of my family’s security, to apply for a new citizenship. We were at the town pool when she quipped, “There are the people who left in 1933, and the people who left in 1939. The former left with their property.” Watching our sons dive off the boards in sync, splashing and circling underwater before reemerging, I thought to myself: The property values in our town are solid, so even if we must leave, we’ll get a good price.

Again, as I tried to respond, I faltered in the strange space between my uncertain fears about what might happen here and my horrified knowledge of outright genocide and ethnic cleansing there. In the last two years, Israel has destroyed or damaged 81 percent of all structures in Gaza, including more than 81,000 homes in Gaza City alone. Despite the so-called “ceasefire,” Israel has denied Palestinians access to materials necessary to make even temporary shelters for winter, and the cold and flooding has meant only more deprivation and death. At least 40,000 Palestinians in the northern West Bank have been made homeless due to Israeli forced displacement in Tulkarem and Jenin.  (more...)

Dr. Karin Kneissl, Austria's former Foreign Minister, diplomat, academic, and journalist, joined me for a year-in-review to discuss some of the most significant events of 2025. The apparent schism between Washington and Brussels, the Ukraine War, and the development of the Arctic are just some of the subjects we examined.

Can Russia and the U.S. enter a new era of rapprochement? Has the E.U. gone mad with its personal sanctions?
