Thorbjorn Jagland is reportedly in hospital in serious condition after being charged with gross corruption over ties to the convicted sex offender

Former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland was hospitalized last week after a suicide attempt, days after being charged with gross corruption over his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Norwegian outlet iNyheter has claimed.

Citing a “rock-solid source,” iNyheter wrote that Jagland’s condition is serious. The facility treating the 75-year-old statesman has not been disclosed.

Jagland is one of Norway's most prominent political figures, having served as prime minister, parliament leader, foreign minister, and Secretary General of the Council of Europe. He also chaired the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 2009 to 2015.

Earlier this month, Jagland was charged with gross corruption following the release of the latest batch of Epstein files by the US Justice Department. Norway's anti-corruption agency carried out extensive searches of Jagland's properties in Oslo and Risor.

According to the agency’s letter to the Council of Europe seeking to lift his immunity, Jagland and his immediate family used Epstein's private apartments in Paris and New York multiple times between 2011 and 2018, and stayed at his villa in Palm Beach, Florida. This week, we take a few minutes to lament the gold medal hockey game loss to the US, before discussing the stories of the week. This week saw the US Supreme Court strike down the tariff's that had been imposed by President Trump, as Adam had predicted after hearing the arguments before that Court. Also, we learned this week that the Tumbler Ridge school shooter was banned from Open AI for their postings on that platform, a school trustee in BC was fined $750,000 for comments about gender identity in the curriculum, and the Surrey Police have been denied in their request to delay their takeover of the RCMP in that region.

Guest Dave Moore, a retired RCMP investigator, takes us inside the struggle for law enforcement to tackle the issue of securing our ports, and has a suggestion for how that may be done, taking after the example of Rotterdam.

All empires, when they are dying, worship the idol of war. War will save the empire. War will resurrect past glory. War will teach an unruly world to obey. But those who bow down before the idol of war, blinded by hypermasculinity and hubris, are unaware that while idols begin by calling for the sacrifice of others, they end by demanding self-sacrifice. Ekpyrosis, the inevitable conflagration that destroys the world according to the ancient Stoics, is part of the cyclical nature of time. There is no escape. Fortuna. There is a time for individual death. There is a time for collective death. In the end, with weary citizens yearning for extinction, empires light their own funeral pyre.

Our high priests of war, Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, Pete Hegseth, Stephen Miller and the Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine, are no different from the fools and charlatans who snuffed out empires of the past — the haughty leaders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the militarists in imperial Germany and the hapless court of Tsarist Russia in World War I. They were followed by the fascists in Italy under Benito Mussolini, Germany under Adolf Hitler and the military rulers of imperial Japan in World War II.

These political entities committed collective suicide.

They drank the same fatal elixir Miller and those in the Trump White House imbibe. They too tried to use industrial violence to reshape the universe. They too considered themselves to be omnipotent. They too saw themselves in the face of the idol of war. They too demanded to be obeyed and worshiped.

Destruction to them is creation. Dissent is sedition. The world is one-dimensional. The strong versus the weak. Only our nation is great. Other nations, even allies, are dismissed with contempt.  (more...)

Maple and Brett Belchetz, at the intersection of private, for-profit healthcare and MAiD

 

For many years, the same voices telling us we need more private healthcare have also been advocating for expansion of medical assistance in dying.

Dr. Brett Belchetz is a key figure in Canada’s increasingly privatized healthcare space, as CEO of private healthcare provider, Maple. As a former management consultant at McKinsey and a senior fellow of the Fraser Institute, it is unsurprising that Belchetz is a proponent of private healthcare, or keen to convince the public that for-profit care is superior - normalization of these positions has made Dr. Belchetz very rich, and set to become much richer.

Belchetz’s role in Canada’s legalization and expansion of medical assistance in dying may be more surprising.

As we wrote earlier this year, Galen Weston’s decades-long plan to privatize primary care in Canada under his ownership has been incredibly successful, despite flying under the radar for most Canadians. The pandemic provided the opportunity for a giant leap forward for Loblaws, Shoppers and Maple.

The timing of the pandemic couldn’t have been a bigger gift for Galen’s healthcare and profit ambitions, in many ways. He had already managed to get Doug Ford to drop the planned increase to the Ontario minimum wage, via a secret meeting right after Doug was elected, ensuring sky high profits when Loblaws was one of the only locations open for “essentials.”

By 2020, a few quarters into the pandemic, Loblaws invested $75 million in virtual health provider Maple Corporation, for whom the pandemic had already been a windfall. But Maple and Loblaws were already connected, as Shoppers Drug Mart was already invested in the company.

Setting the stage to privatize Canada’s much-beloved public healthcare system has been decades in the making. Canada’s media outlets have gone to great lengths to platform and position Belchetz as a “medical expert” - he is a regular guest on CTV and Global, and writes op-eds for Postmedia and The National Post - but there are two features of his background that never make it into his introduction or his biography.  (more...)

Israeli Reveals His Country's Real Goal

 

“If this is my story, then how do Palestinians feel?”

This was the turning point for Jewish Arab Israeli Alon Mizrahi, a Mizrahi Jew who grew up in Israel facing racism and discrimination his whole life because of the color of his skin and the type of Jew he is. Mizrahi Jews ancestrally come from the Middle East. Ashkenazi Jews, like Netanyahu, come from Central and Eastern Europe.

“I wasn't an Israeli,” Alon says. “I was treated differently, I was looked at differently by teachers in school, in university, by people everywhere. And when I was willing to accept that there's no such thing as an Israeli, my next step was, if this is my story, how do Palestinians feel? Or how do Arabs feel?”

Alon felt the long-engrained Zionism taught to him beginning to splinter. “And then I started reading about the actual history of Zionism and Palestine. And it didn't take long for me to get it. It has nothing to do with reality. Zionism is 100% fiction. There's not one grain of truth to all of it.”

So as the story he was told began to break apart and the death tolls of Palestinians rose each year, all without any word from the media he was instructed to trust, Alon’s worldview, like many people’s these days, has turned cold.

“I'm in a stage in my life,” he says, “where I question everything. Nothing is sacred for me. Nothing. People are sacred. Children and babies are sacred. But that's the only thing. The rest I don't give a f*ck about. I'm willing to accept everything I know about anything is a lie, a political lie, brainwashing, propaganda.”

As an Israeli who is now awake inside of Israel, Alon Mizrahi tells us his government’s plans:

“Netanyahu is preparing for a bigger and more apocalyptic war.” He believes Netanyahu will soon invade Lebanon, opening up a new front in order to keep his power steady as the war rages on. But Lebanon is not Hamas: their army and arsenal are fully equipped. Which is why Alon has such a dark prediction for Israel’s  current fate: “National suicide.”

And how does that end? “I think this is going to be the war that breaks Israel.”

A pro-longing mental health and suicide crisis at UofT is extremely concerning

 

University of Toronto has a dark history of neglecting student mental health. Now at the current student led encampment on King’s College, students face psychological warfare and threats of violence from their administration.

At least five suicides have taken place at the University of Toronto’s (UofT’s) Bahen Centre for Information Technology. The building has become a cruel reminder for the university’s dark reputation for neglecting mental health care. Data from annual UofT Campus Safety reports show that cases of suicide/suicide attempts more than doubled in 2022 compared to 2021 (14 vs 6). 

Instead of addressing the root causes of mental health issues, the UofT administration is focused on introducing superficial reforms (such as changing the name of Campus Police to Campus Safety). Worse, they appear to be taking more carceral approaches to addressing student concerns. Racialized and international students are disproportionately more likely to be subjected to hostile actions by the UofT administration. 

These problematic trends have been laid bare in the UofT administration’s response to the genocide in Palestine. In addition to systematically disregarding the wellbeing of Palestinian students, the UofT administration has opted to take punitive actions against students protesting UofT’s complicity in genocidal profiteering. In doing so, the UofT administration is critically worsening the mental health situation on its campuses.  (more...)

Why Would Anyone Kill One’s Self In an Attempt to Stop A War?

I’m about to engage in an extreme act of protest, but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine, at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal…Free Palestine!”

Four years ago in 2018, after returning from a Veterans For Peace trip to Viet Nam, I wrote an article called “Why Would Anyone Kill One’s Self In an Attempt to Stop A War?”

Now, four years later, in the past three months, two persons in the United States have taken their own lives in an attempt to change U.S. policies on Palestine and call for a Ceasefire and stop U.S. funding to the State of Israel that would be used to kill in the Israeli genocide of Gaza. An yet unidentified woman, wrapped in a Palestinian flag, set herself on fire in front of the Israeli consulate in Atlanta, Georgia on December 1, 2023. Three months later authorities have yet to release the name of the woman.

This week, on Sunday, February 25, 2024, active duty U.S. Air Force Aaron Bushnell, set himself on fire at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC, while he was stating “Free Palestine and Stop the Genocide.”

As I mentioned in the article in 2018, many in America admire young men and women who join the military and profess to be willing to give up their lives for whatever the U.S. politicians/government decide is best for another country—”freedom and democracy” for those who don’t have the U.S. version of it, or overthrowing self-rule that is not compatible with the U.S. administration’s view. Actual U.S. national security seldom has anything to do with U.S. invasions and occupations of other countries.

But, what about a private citizen giving up his or her life to try to stop the politicians/government from deciding what is best for other countries? Could a “mere” citizen be so concerned about politicians/government actions that she/he is willing to die to bring public attention to the actions?
