Canadian society has been become secularized more and more over the decades. The issue of religious freedom goes back to the nation's beginning to the Canadian Constitution of 1867. In New Brunswick in 1871, a law that would force one public school system on all citizens led to riots against Catholics. At least two people died as a result and property was seized from Catholic priests. In 1890, The Manitoba School Crisis resulted from the cutting of public funding of Catholic schools. Manitoba Catholics were so upset that Pope Leo XIII intervened by writing an encyclical
Affari Vos in support Catholic education.
But the deep erosion of the Catholic culture began in earnest after the World War II. And more than that, and you may not even be aware of this, Canadian culture has presently become openly anti-Christian. Discrimination and harassment against Christians are becoming acceptable. God is no longer wanted in our schools. God has been legislated from the public square. Our nanny governments have announced that they can do everything better on their own.
