Local elementary teacher charged with sex crimes

WATERLOO REGION — A longtime local teacher faces sexual allegations in connection with an incident at a school that involved a student.

Ian Sommer was charged this week with sexual assault and sexual interference. He was released by Waterloo Regional Police on a promise to appear in court in mid-November.

A brief report released by police Friday indicates the alleged incident took place on Waterloo Street in New Hamburg in early September. No other details were disclosed.

Profiles posted by Sommer on various social media websites say he has taught subjects including science and French to elementary students for the Waterloo Region District School Board since 1989.

In addition to stops in Cambridge and Woolwich Township, he had Grade 7 and 8 teaching jobs at Forest Glen Public School in New Hamburg and Queensmount Public School in Kitchener.

Sommer's online profiles also say he has been active for almost 20 years with the local chapter of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario.  (more...)
