The Dark Side of Virgil Dechant’s Legacy

Under Virgil Dechant’s leadership, the Knights of Columbus – that is, its local members – continued to raise millions of dollars in charitable funds for worthwhile projects, including refugee relief programs, especially in the Middle East; assistance to victims of natural disasters in the U.S. and abroad; the restoration of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and other Vatican antiquities; support for prolife emergency pregnancy services, and financial assistance to special needs groups.   

These efforts, made possible thanks to funds raised by local rank-and-file Knights, are not in dispute. They are fully acknowledged by this writer with the attached caveat included in the end notes.

What is in dispute are the financial and moral misadventures of Supreme Knight, Virgil C. Dechant, along with members of the Knights of Columbus ruling Supreme Council, which paved the way for further misadventures under Dechant’s Opus Dei successor, Carl Anderson. 

Following is just a sampling of the Knights’ deadly ill-advised grants, programs and policies that took place under the Dechant administration, including the sexual abuse cases of minor boys by Knights that occurred during Dechant’s rule, but which were later ruthlessly litigated under the Anderson administration. 

Its purpose is to provide further background on the Knights of Columbus prior to the take-over of the corporation by Opus, and to document the growth of the ever-widening chasm that exists between the worldview of rank-and-file member Knights and that of the National Officers who make up the ruling and spending class of the Knights of Columbus corporate structure.  (more...)

Opus Dei and the Knights of Columbus: Anatomy of a Takeover

 

In the business world,  a “takeover bid” is defined as an attempt by a competing person or entity to gain control of a company by buying up most of its stock. Militarily speaking, it is a hostile act of assuming power and control over a country, political party, movement, or corporation by deception, stealth, fraud, and if needed – force.

For the last thirty-plus years, the Knights of Columbus, one of the world’s most powerful, and wealthiest Catholic business and fraternal corporations has become a hapless target of infiltration, assimilation, and control by the international quasi-religious money/power entity known as Opus Dei.

This study of the bloodless coup d’état by Opus Dei, hereafter referred to as Opus (since it is not of God), against the Knights of Columbus is based on public records and documents,  news articles, and IRS 990 returns of the Knights and other key organizations involved in the organization. 

The study is by no means a definitive work because  much of the needed financial data and minutes of board meetings, etc., can only be obtained by legal proceedings, including the pre-trial litigation process of “discovery,” and the testimony of the Supreme Knights, past and present, taken under oath, as well as those of the Knights’ other national officers, board of directors, advisors, and consultants. Financial records would also have to be subpoenaed from banks and other financial institutions.

This study is further complicated by the fact that lay membership of Opus, specifically the names of its numeraries, supernumeraries, and cooperators (with the exceptions of select public Opus  figures) is kept secret both in practice and by statute.    

However, while Opus’ capture of the Knights of Columbus and its assets is well advanced, it is not yet a done deal. 

This series of nine installments is written with two objectives in mind: 

First, it is intended to provide the reader with a step-by-step description of how Opus goes about infiltrating and colonizing very wealthy and influential organizations and media outlets, relieving them of millions of dollars of their business and charitable donations, which are then systematically funneled into the coffers of Opus “apostolates” to further the ambitions and programs of “The Work.” 

Second, it is written with the hope that the long-suffering, hard-working rank and file members of the Knights, who represent the salt-of-the earth and who constitute the basic unit of the Knights, will discover within themselves the will and the means to resist both the internal and the external forces of Opus upon their fraternity, including the top leadership members of the corporation who have become, willingly or unwilling, shills and water-boys for the powerful Prelature. 

One of the Knights’ mottos is “We are men who get things done.” I hope that will be the case at this critical juncture of the history of the Knights of Columbus.  (more...)

If a child told you they’d been sexually assaulted by an adult what would you do? Would you call police? Would you report the allegations to a children’s aid society? Or would you do neither?

For most of us, the moral choice is clear. So why has the obligation to report often been ignored by many who claim to be doing God’s work?

Sister Nuala Kenny is a pediatrician who has spent decades examining the sexual assault scandal rocking the religious institution she’s given her life to. As a nun, she calls the Catholic Church’s response to the abuse of children “a contradiction to what we’ve been called to be as Christians.”

A CityNews investigation has uncovered several child sexual assault claims against an order of Catholic priests based in Toronto. Dating back decades, the Basilian Fathers were made aware of abuse allegations against their own priests, but historically, cases were never reported to police or a children’s aid society. Instead, allegations were dealt with internally, resulting in alleged predator priests continuing to work in schools and churches.

“If the Church had reacted more effectively and properly, we would not have the catastrophe that we have today.”

It’s a scenario lawyer Rob Talach has seen again and again.

“This is the repetitive story in the Catholic cases, these priests are often reported and moved. I term it ‘the silent shuffle,’” he says. “If the Church had reacted more effectively and properly, we would not have the catastrophe that we have today.”  (more...)

Toronto-based order of priests buried allegations of sex abuse at boys camp: whistleblower

 

For a group of underprivileged children from Toronto, a sunny escape became a cabin of horrors.

A whistleblower tells CityNews he reported allegations of child sexual assault by a Catholic Father and said he now wishes he hadn’t gone to the priest’s religious order to seek justice.

“In hindsight, knowing more now, I would have phoned the police,” said Bill Taylor. “But at 17, I did what I thought was right.”

This is the first time he’s publicly sharing his story.

In 1978, Taylor was a teen from Windsor who worked as a counsellor at Columbus Boys’ Camp. The now-closed Orillia institution hosted as many as 1,200 underprivileged children from the GTA every summer.

It was run by the Congregation of St. Basil, an order of Catholic priests now known as the Basilian Fathers, or Basilians, whose headquarters is in Toronto.

According to Taylor, a group of boys, between the ages of six and eight, told him and another counselor about their experiences with the Basilian director of the camp, Father Leo Campbell.

Taylor said the boys alleged that Fr. Campbell had been coming to their cabin at night, putting his hands in their sleeping bags and fondling them.

Today’s drive for “Abortion Consensus” as a legislative and political strategy for the Prolife Movement can be traced back to a Knights of Columbus public relations ploy titled “The Moral Compass Project,” carried out by the Media, Research and Development team of the Knights under the leadership of Supreme Knight Carl Anderson between 2008 and 2010 and the Marist Institute for Public Opinion (MIPO), a polling and survey outfit located at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Details of the Knight’s costly project are relayed in Anderson’s 2010 book Beyond A House Divided – The Moral Consensus Ignored by Washington, Wall Street, and the Media.

It should be noted that although written by a prominent Catholic layman and funded by a Catholic organization, the book is not Catholic in any sense of the word and it reeks of the heresy of Americanism beginning with the first paragraph of the Foreword.

According to Anderson, Beyond A House Divided is designed “to contribute to the national conversation about what direction the country ought to take based not on a partisan political approach, but on a moral sense – and consensus – of the American people.” The issues upon which the book builds its consensus concepts are “religious and traditional values,” “freedom of religion,” “freedom of conscience,” “marketplace morality,” “restricted abortion” and “the future of marriage.”

“Since this is a book about American values,” Anderson explains, “we have chosen for our definition of consensus one endorsed by the Founders of the country: a two-thirds majority, which is the number needed to override a veto or ratify a treaty.”  (more...)

This is a follow up to my report on the Vatican ATM Machines and how they were shut down and restarted as soon as Benedict had accepted to abdicate. The bankers really wanted Benedict out, as soon as possible, and the ones to make the ATM decision appear to have been both graduates of the St. Gallen Universsity.

The other key historical event surrounding February 11, 2013, now needs to be discussed. It is the ousting of Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, a German nobleman with an excellent reputation for honesty and integrity, from his role in overseeing the financial books of the Vatican. As soon as he started to clean up accounts, the commission of Cardinals overseeing his work voted him out. They did not even wait for the consent of Pope Benedict XVI, who heard about it on TV.

Pope Benedict XVI was not to be intimidated. The closing of the ATM machines at the beginning of January 2013 was not going to force him to surrender. So he instructed his Secretary of State, Cardinal Bertone to call back to the Vatican Mr. Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, and promise him that he would be reinstated, at the Pope’s personal request.

This was a consummate chess move. Now, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi could never be fired again. He would continue his works and discover whatever hidden or misused monies where there. There was no way to remove him.

The Cardinals were already arriving or in Rome for the next Consistory, which would take place in a few days, on Febuary 11, 2013, to confirm the canonizations of three groups of Saints and Martyrs.

The enemies of Pope Benedict XVI now had no other option but to force his resignation.  (more...)

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa and he was partly financed by the Doria banking family which have intermarried with the House of Colonna several times in the past like with Prince Fabrizio Colonna and his wife Bianca Doria the Duchessa of Tursi as well as Prince Andrea Doria III of Melfi and his wife Princess Giovanna Colonna di Paliano. The Colonna family ruled in Alba Longa and covertly established a branch in Salamanca, Spain as the Dukes of Alba originally ruled by the Alvarez family now the Dukes of Toledo. Salamanca uses the column on its flag and the Dukes of Alba are intermarried with Christopher Columbus' family with his son Diego Colon and Maria de Toledo. The Alvarez family and their billionaire cousins the FitzJames family of Spain and Dukes of Alba currently work with the Colonnas. A $4.25-million lawsuit filed against a former St. Charles College teacher, the Basilian Fathers of Toronto and the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie has been settled.

A now 67-year-old man brought the case against the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of Sault Ste. Marie, the Basilians and the now-deceased William Hodgson Marshall.

It dismissed without costs at a Superior Court of Justice pre-trial meeting.

Had the case not been settled, it would have started Monday at the Sudbury Courthouse, said Rob Talach of Beckett Litigation Lawyers in London, Ont.

"The family was involved," he said in an interview. "There was a lot of fatigue, psychological fatigue. It was resolved at the pre-trial."

Talach said the lawsuit was settled in the 67-year-old man's favour, but could not go into details due to a confidentiality condition.

Talach said Marshall had been convicted in 2011 of sexually abusing the victim.

"(Marshall) littered the province with bodies," said the lawyer. "There was no question it (sexual abuse) occurred ... What is a life that was deviated from its normal course worth?"  (more...)

Perhaps mercifully, tuition was not granted for my attendance at Assumption High School, which had offered acceptance to me. The boys from my class that attended Assumption left after only one year and all ended up at the secular high school that I enrolled in -- and excelled. No-one wanted to talk about their experiences at Assumption. Catholic schools are not always the best choice, and the required fees not beneficial.

On August 17th, Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, promulgated a Bull (or load thereof) in the form of an editorial published by The Hill.

The editorial is an embarrassing display of both unbridled Americanism and sheer hypocrisy that not only renders a disservice to those individual Knights who embrace neither; it also makes it necessary for such men to reconsider whether or not continued membership in the Order is still warranted.

In his editorial, Anderson takes to task those “Catholic politicians in America” who invoke the Mario Cuomo argument that civil authorities mustn’t “impose their religious beliefs” on the people – thus enabling one to play both sides of the fence on matters of intrinsic evil; e.g., claiming to be faithfully and “personally opposed” to such things as abortion on the one hand, while supporting the same legislatively on the other.

“Such an argument by a Catholic politician was bogus then, and it is untenable now,” Anderson writes.

So far so good, but after arguing that science itself confirms that abortion is the taking of a human life (i.e., it is an objective truth and not simply a “religious belief”), he then goes full bore Americanist  (more...)

That's a question that the now 30-year-old teacher and his mother, Angela Kennedy, have grappled with since Angela took a stand against the new curriculum late last year as chair of the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB).

Angela's concerns stem from her Catholic beliefs. But Brian argued against denying students that information, suggesting the curriculum could help students stay safe.

Now, the school board chair has had a "change of heart."

"I can't change what happened to my son," said Angela. "But I can help other parents to understand that if they open that dialogue, perhaps their child is going to have a healthier life."

The Basilian Fathers once staffed the now defunct Columbus Boy’s Camp in Orillia Ontario .  The camp became of interest to me personally when I read that the now deceased and “alleged” molester Father Leo Campbell csb, a Basilian, “ministered at the camp.”

When I discovered that the camp had been administered by the Basilian Fathers since its foundation in 1929, and given that I now know of three Canadian Basilians – Father Robert Whyte, William Hodgson Marshall and Leo Campbell – who have been publicly charged or accused I decided I should try to learn more.

My efforts to learn more about Columbus Boys’ Camp (CBC) are restricted at this time to what information I can find on the internet.  I have also received some information first hand.

The information online is sketchy and at times contradictory.  I have decided therefore to paste a series of CBC-related articles and/or bits of information with the corresponding links.

It seems that the Knights of Columbus funded and promoted the camp from its inception in 1929, but throughout those years the task of managing the camp and selecting camp counsellors and directors as well as providing spiritual direction was the domain of the Basilian Fathers.  (more...)

Many Catholics who care about the Church's teachings may have been pleased to hear last week that the Boston Globe will be dropping all financial support for Crux, its left-leaning Catholic news and commentary website, effective April 1.

Shortly thereafter, those same Catholics may also have felt let down and perhaps even surprised on learning that Crux's ideologically dubious presence will be preserved through the funds of the Knights of Columbus.

Many of Crux's writers are notorious for challenging or obscuring the Church's doctrines, prompting some bloggers to dismiss Crux as just another version of the dissident, "progressive" National Catholic Reporter (NCR, also known as the "Fishwrap"). As Fr. John Zuhlsdorf predicted shortly after its launch, "Crux might be a slicker, smarter Fishwrap on steroids."

NEW YORK (ChurchMilitant.com) - New York's Cdl. Timothy Dolan is celebrating greater inclusion at this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade, which has lifted its ban on homosexuals and allowed two gay activist groups to march officially under their own banners.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who dropped his boycott of the parade and marched through the streets of New York City Thursday, praised the event for welcoming homosexuals.

"I think it sends a moral signal," he told the press. "This says that New York City is whole again, that the people of New York City are unified, and that we're learning to overcome division."

Cardinal Dolan and de Blasio warmly embraced, Dolan telling a reporter from the local CBS affiliate that he was "thrilled" that "decades of division" had been overcome.

EXPOSÉ: Baltimore in LEAD in parish gay activism

According to the infamous list of “gay friendly parishes” published by New Ways Ministry (NWM) – the Consumer Reports of “homo-catholicism” – the Archdiocese of Baltimore is comfortably positioned in the LEAD when it comes to parish-based gay activism in the Mid-Atlantic region, with LEAD being an acronym for “LGBT Educating and Affirming Diversity.”

I’ll explain more about LEAD in a moment.

For now, let’s take a look at how the Archdiocese of Baltimore, my home diocese, stacks up against area competition.

To the south, the Archdiocese of Washington, led for nearly a decade by Donald Cardinal Wuerl (who is no slouch when it comes to coddling gay militants), is able to boast of just three parishes on the NWM “gay friendly” list.

That’s just 2.14% of its parishes overall, but respectable nonetheless given that the national average is roughly 1.3%.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore, by contrast, is practically a gay pilgrimage destination; ringing the bell at no less than seven NWM “gay friendly” parishes. That’s a whopping 4.86% of its total; more than 3.5 times the national average!  (more...)
