Canadian physics professor steps back from job over Epstein questions

 

Epstein files place Perimeter Institute's Lee Smolin and other prominent Canadians under scrutiny

A highly regarded theoretical physicist is stepping away from the Ontario institute he helped found, after his ties to the late American sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were revealed in recently released files.

Lee Smolin, an American Canadian professor of physics and philosophy, has "agreed to pause his working relationship" with the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ont., according to an email on Thursday from Perimeter's executive director, Marcela Carena. 

Smolin was a founding faculty member of the independent research centre, which is known around the world for pioneering work in quantum theory and got much of its initial funding from BlackBerry co-founder Mike Lazaridis. 

Smolin was working at the Perimeter Institute part time and also has academic appointments at the University of Waterloo and University of Toronto. 

His correspondence with Epstein was part of more than three million new pages of files released by the U.S. Department of Justice on Jan. 30. 

Nothing CBC News has seen suggests Smolin did anything illegal or participated in any of Epstein's illicit activities, and appearing in the files is not an indication in itself of any wrongdoing. However, questions have emerged after the documents revealed his relationship with the financier continued for years after Epstein's conviction for sex offences.

The files show that Smolin continued to correspond with Epstein, and the two made repeated efforts to talk by phone and meet up, until at least 2013 — five years after the latter pleaded guilty in Florida to state charges of soliciting prostitution from a minor and another criminal count. The paper trail appears to contradict Smolin's own account of his relationship with Epstein.  (more...)

Israel's arms manufacturers benefit from EU funding for cutting edge civilian research

 

Public data shows that Israeli arms companies have obtained grants for civilian projects despite a strict EU ban on funding research that can be used in warfare

The EU has funnelled millions of euros' worth of funding meant for civilian research programmes to Israeli arms manufacturers and other defence firms despite a ban on the funding of military and dual-use research.

Public records show Israeli companies, central to the state’s military industry, have repeatedly participated in EU-backed research, including as part of the Horizon Europe and its predecessor Horizon 2020 programmes.

Funding data reviewed by Middle East Eye shows that between 2014 and 2025, Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe allocated nearly more than $15m to projects involving Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), a state-owned defence company and one of Israel’s largest weapons manufacturers.

IAI produces drones, missile systems and surveillance technology used in the genocide in Gaza and the occupation of the West Bank.

Since the mid-1980s, EU member states have pooled research funding in successive schemes, the most recent of which is Horizon Europe, which runs between 2021 and 2027 and has a budget of €100bn ($116bn).

Countries not part of the EU can also participate by paying an association fee, which gives their universities and companies access to grants.

Israel has been one of the biggest beneficiaries among the associated members, particularly in security research.

The EU has maintained strict restrictions on the nature of the research allowed under the scheme and has a ban on “dual use” research that can be applied to military uses in order to ensure publicly funded civilian projects cannot be repurposed for warfare.

Unlike the EU, Israel does not maintain strict separation between civilian and military research, as its research ecosystem is structurally intertwined with its defence sector.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a European expert in financing for research and technological development at an Italian university, described dual use for military purposes  as “the malignant application of good intentions”.  (more...)

Boycotts ‘shake the foundations’ of Israeli academia: Report

Academics describe scientific research as ‘a central engine of economic growth’ for Israel, cautioning that weakening universities could jeopardize long-term economic recovery

The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities warned in its annual report, covered by Haaretz on 4 January, that sustained government cuts to academic research funding, combined with the global backlash of the genocide in Gaza, risk having “far-reaching consequences” for Israel's science sector.

The Academy report notes that the world’s boycott of Israeli academia in response to Tel Aviv's war crimes in Gaza has shaken “the foundations of scientific cooperation” and undermined the ability of young researchers to establish themselves.

The report also states that public investment in research and development at Israeli universities has been steadily shrinking for over a decade, even as most OECD countries have increased spending.

Over the 2014–2023 period, spending on academic research in Israel dropped by roughly four percent, while the OECD spending average rose by nearly 20 percent.

This decline has pushed Israeli researchers, particularly early-career academics, to rely heavily on foreign grants, as the academy notes that around 93 percent of Israel’s R&D spending is directed to the business sector, leaving just about 5.5 percent for academia – one of the lowest ratios in the OECD.

Much discussion has been devoted to the origin of Covid-19. A great deal of this is propaganda featuring the “Lab-Leak” hypothesis.

As we shall see, this theory is not only untenable, but technologically obsolete.

To understand the origins of the pandemic, it must be seen in the context of anti-China operations and propaganda. Fundamentally, the virus might be seen as the Northwoods virus. This point will be covered at greater length later in this article.

It is also fundamentally important to understand “gain-of-function” research on micro-organisms. This is a dangerous and highly controversial procedure under which micro-organisms are genetically engineered to make them more virulent and deadly.

David Miller is a British sociologist born in 1964, known for his research on propaganda and Islamophobia. He has held academic positions at several universities, including the University of Strathclyde, the University of Bath, and the University of Bristol.

Miller co-founded Public Interest Investigations, a non-profit organization, and has been involved in research on media portrayals, terrorism, and political violence.

His work has sparked both acclaim and controversy, particularly regarding his views on Israel and Jewish student groups, which led to his dismissal from the University of Bristol in 2021.

However, in 2024, an employment tribunal ruled that his dismissal was unfair and discriminatory, recognizing his anti-Zionist beliefs as a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.

Academic bodies in Europe and South America are distancing from Israeli institutions, though few in the UK, France and Germany follow suit

Mounting numbers of universities and academic bodies across Europe and South America are severing ties with Israeli institutions over concerns of their complicity with Israel's genocide in Gaza.

Last year, Brazil's Federal University of Ceara (UFC) cancelled an innovation summit with an Israeli university, while universities across Norway, Belgium and Spain cut links with Israeli institutions.

This year, others, including Trinity College in Dublin, have followed suit.

In March, the University of Amsterdam announced it was halting a student exchange programme with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, while the European Association of Social Anthropologists declared it would not collaborate with Israeli academic institutions.

However, most universities in the UK, France and Germany have resisted mounting pressure from staff and students to do the same.

Universities UK (UUK) issued a statement opposing an academic boycott against Israel, saying it would "represent an infringement of academic freedom".  (more...)

Internal paper shows EU sought to shield Israel from sanctions

 

An internal paper reveals that European Union officials have gone to considerable lengths in assuring Israel that they would continue cooperating with it during the genocidal war against Gaza.

Despite frequent talk about how “red lines” must not be crossed, the EU has so far backed away from collectively sanctioning the Israeli state as it massacres and starves Palestinians.

The determination to preserve a business as usual approach is evident from a September 2024 document, obtained via a freedom of information request.

High-level Brussels officials held a discussion that month with Dror Bin, head of the Israel Innovation Authority. Briefing notes prepared for the meeting celebrated the EU’s partnership with Israel on scientific research as “excellent and beneficial to both parties.”

The paper makes clear that the European Commission – the EU’s executive – wished to preserve and even strengthen that partnership.

For the EU it is “extremely important” to work with Israel as it has a “top-notch innovation capacity,” the paper says. At 5.44 percent of gross domestic product, Israel’s expenditure on research and innovation is considerably higher than the 2.26 percent average for the EU’s 27 countries.

Rather than containing any specific details about the Gaza genocide, the paper merely referred to “the current conflict in the Middle East.”

Palestine solidarity groups and numerous academics had called for Israel to be expelled from Horizon Europe, the EU’s scientific research program. Yet the paper underscored that the European Commission was opposed to those calls.

Ending participation in the program “solely on the basis of the nationality should be considered as an improper termination” and “amounting to discrimination,” the paper – see below – says.

The argument put forward here betrays the pro-Israel bias of the EU institutions.

The Gaza genocide involves racism in its rawest form. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, has repeatedly framed it as a war of “civilization against barbarism.” At one point, he invoked the Bible to apparently threaten an entire population with annihilation.

Although Palestinians are viewed as “human animals” who may be butchered en masse, the EU has been eager to paint Israel – the state carrying out the genocide – as a potential victim of discrimination.  (more...)

In January 2023, Dell Technologies Inc, an American multinational, won a tender from the Israeli defense ministry to provide servers and related services to the Israeli military, other security bodies and the ministry itself.

The deal was valued at over $150 million.

Corporate watchdog WhoProfits.org reported on the tender and revealed that Dell subsidiaries like VMware and EMC Israel Advanced Information Technologies, along with Dell staff, provided technology and training to the Israeli military and partnered in occupation-linked initiatives such as the National Cyber Park in the Naqab, which Israel established after “a government decision to promote national capabilities in the cyber space as part of a concept of combined work between government, academia, industry and the military.”

However, internal documents obtained by The Electronic Intifada suggest Dell is more closely entwined with the Israeli military than previously known, particularly by supplying technology for Israel’s artificial intelligence (AI) -assisted genocide in Gaza.

Dell’s ties to Israel stretch back two decades: In 2006, it won a tender to provide 50,000 computers to the Israeli army and another to supply portable computers to the government.

In 2016, Dell rebranded to Dell Technologies after merging with software firm EMC Corporation, enabling greater focus on emerging cloud technologies.

Dell also absorbed EMC’s extensive Israeli presence – it had been active there since 1996, establishing its first research and development center in Ramat Gan in 2006.

In 2011, after acquiring several Israeli start-ups, the R&D center was rebranded “a center of excellence.”  (more...)

JD Salinger had a short, ill-fated marriage with a beautiful German gentile doctor named Sylvia at the exact time he was determining the fate of many doctors at the Nazi doctor trials in Nuremburg, Germany.

We believe Salinger, working for the US Army Counter Intelligence Corp (CIC), softened his judgements of the Nazi doctors during this crucial period, not only commuting their death sentence, but also allowing some to come to the United States like Eric Traub.

Many of the Nazi doctors at Nuremburg were marked for execution.

Yet somehow, Salinger’s group conducted the interviews of these doctors, and the Nazi doctors won their reprieve. Otto Ambrose and Walter Schreiber were responsible for the development of bioweapons and used Jews for experiments, and later went on to successful careers at IG Farben. Eric Traub came to the United States under CIA patronage and created bioagents like Lyme Disease at Plum Island Lab 257.

We attribute that to Salinger torrid romance with a German doctor during these crucial Nazi doctor interviews to spare them from execution. Salinger wrote Catcher in the Rye when his eight-month romance with Sylvia Welter had soured, after Salinger had recommended the reprieves.

Catcher in the Rye strikes out at the phoniness of society, and perhaps he was still stinging from his romance being used to secure Nazi doctor commutations. We believe his true title for his book should have been “Nazi Catcher In The Rye” because he regretted failing in his Jewish heritage to bring the “Nazi Doctors” to justice.  (more...)

Evidence Of Historic Human Remains at Former Hospital Site

TIOHTIÁ:KE (MONTRÉAL, QC) – The Kanienʼkehá:ka Kahnistensera (Mohawk Mothers) gathered with dozens of supporters near the former Royal Victoria Hospital site to hold a vigil for the victims of unethical medical experimentation and a press conference to share new scientific findings from several investigations led by independent experts.

Three techniques have been used to detect historic human remains and identify probable burial sites at the former Royal Victoria Hospital: ground-penetrating radar, historic human remains detection dogs, and, most recently, the S4 Subterra Grey probe, which is designed to detect burials by analysing soil contents and compactness. To date, the probe has been used in one location near the Allan Memorial Institute. The Kahnistensera announced that the results of all three remote sensing methods support the presence of human remains at this location.

“In one area near the Allan Memorial Institute, investigations using three separate remote-sensing technologies have finally been completed,” said Kahentinetha, one of the Mohawk Mothers. “We have received a report combining these results that states, quote, ‘The combination of three separate lines of evidence supports the presence of human remains’ near the Allan Memorial Institute.”

In addition to being on unceded traditional Kanien'kehá:ka territory containing important precolonial burials and other sites, the grounds of the old Royal Victoria Hospital are suspected to contain the unmarked burials of Indigenous children and other victims of psychiatric experiments conducted as part of the CIA's Project MK-ULTRA, a project that developed “mind control” and torture techniques. Burials on-site may also be the result of the neglect and mistreatment endured by those incarcerated in medical and pedagogical institutions.  (more...)

Israel punches way above its weight when it comes to arms sales. The 97th country by population, it is the ninth largest arms dealer in the world with a $13bn military-industrial complex.

"Plenty of countries sell weapons," says award-winning journalist Antony Loewenstein, "but what makes Israel's industry unique is the mix of weapons, surveillance technology and architectural techniques that combine to create a comprehensive system for controlling 'difficult' populations and are based on years of experience in Palestine."

Antony Loewenstein is a Jewish, Australian journalist and author who for more than 20 years has written unflinchingly about Israel and its relationship with the Palestinians, even though it has often put him at odds with many in the Jewish diaspora and Israel.

In Episode 1, Loewenstein returns to Israel to investigate how cutting-edge military and surveillance technology is being used on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, before being marketed to international clients as "field-proven" and "battle-tested".

Hearing from Palestinians and Israelis, he uncovers how a pipeline of personnel and research from the Israeli army feeds into semi-private arms companies which form a crucial part of Israel's exports to the world. He also investigates the Israeli army's use of targeting systems that utilise artificial intelligence during the Gaza war after October 7, 2023.
