Monte McNaughton: Letter to Education Minister Liz Sandals

Tuesday, August 4, 2015

Hon. Liz Sandals
Ministry of Education
22nd Floor, Mowat Block
900 Bay Street
Toronto, OntarioM7A 1L2

Dear Minister Sandals,

If labour talks are successful, next month will see the return of students and the re-opening of schools all across Ontario. As you know, hundreds of thousands of Ontario residents are concerned about the rushed implementation of the new sex-education curriculum that your government has mandated for Ontario’s elementary school students.

This spring, I was pleased to introduce in the Legislature petitions signed by over 185,000 parents across Ontario.  The petitions called for scrapping the sex-education component of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum and starting over with a meaningful parental consultation process that actually gets buy-in from parents across the Province of Ontario.

Concerns heard range from the age appropriateness of the content, to the yet to be defined opt-out process and the lack of buy-in and consultation from Ontario’s parents. We have heard significant concerns expressed from families who attend both French and Catholic schools and we also know that Ontario’s elementary teachers are not participating in sex-education training under the current work-to-rule campaign.

Minister, the new school year begins in just a few weeks and with the wide spectrum of legitimate concerns and objections being raised by parents, I am writing today to once again urge you to immediately stop the implementation of the new sex-education curriculum. Parents across Ontario are rightly concerned about both the forced and rushed nature of the new curriculum, and deserve to be heard.

Sincerely,

Monte McNaughton, MPP
Lambton-Kent-Middlesex
