Secret life of John Leek: A teacher preying on vulnerable boys

It would take 50 years for the truth about John Leek to be
revealed in a Hamilton courtroom earlier this month
John Leek's entire life was seemingly devoted to teaching and comforting children.

He was a trusted teacher, social worker, principal and organist at Hamilton's children's choir. Parents invited him into their homes, unaware they had just welcomed a sexual predator who preyed on vulnerable boys.

It would take 50 years for the truth about Leek to be revealed in a Hamilton courtroom earlier this month.

"Instead of living up to obligations of his roles as a teacher, volunteer … he exploited the trust of victims and families," said assistant Crown attorney Brent Bentham on Aug. 11, the day Leek was convicted of 10 sex charges against seven victims from the mid-1960s to 1980.

"His standing in the community was the very currency by which he was able to sexually abuse the victims and get away with it for this long period of time."  (more...)
