Edmonton teacher admitted to sex acts with teen girls

The Crown is seeking up to nine years in prison for a former Edmonton Catholic junior high school drama teacher who had a sexual relationship with two female students.

Piotr Zaloba, 29, earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual interference, one count of sexual counselling, four counts of luring a child and three counts relating to possessing, transmitting and publishing child pornography.

On Monday, Crown prosecutor Diane Hollinshead argued for a sentence of between eight and nine years for Zaloba.

She noted it is a major breach of trust for a teacher to get involved sexually with a student and said Zaloba’s “predatory nature” and the way he groomed the girls, aged 13 and 15, in texts and online chats were aggravating.

Hollinshead also said during the sentencing hearing that, despite being warned about the dangers of inappropriate behaviour involving students, Zaloba only stopped offending when he was caught in the act.  (more...)
