Toronto Catholic trustees cut jobs, and their pay


Teacher librarians, high school teachers, principals, vice-principals and special education staff have all been hit as the Toronto Catholic board works to eliminate a $34.3 million funding shortfall.

In a symbolic move, on Wednesday night Trustee Maria Rizzo also suggested reducing trustees’ $18,000 yearly pay by 5 per cent, as well as chopping their expenses and a fund for professional development.

“It was a symbolic gesture — if everyone is bleeding we have to bleed too,” said Rizzo, whose motions passed.

On April 7, trustees will debate how to cut the remaining $7.3 million.

Last week, they approved cutting 14 principals, eight vice-principals, 12 high school special education teachers, 30 educational assistants as well as four elementary guidance counsellors, among others.  (more...)
