Trustees booted for missing the campaign expense filing deadline mum on plans


As the clock ticks toward a deadline for two ousted trustees to fight to reclaim their seats, both are remaining quiet about their plans.

Harkirat Singh, removed as trustee for two Brampton wards after failing to file his campaign expenses, and David Smith, the incumbent for Scarborough Centre who was turfed for the same reason, have hired lawyers — but neither board nor city officials in either case have received any update.

“At this point in time, the (Toronto District School Board) has not received any notice of a court application by former trustee Smith,” said spokesperson Ryan Bird.

On Monday, Smith’s lawyer said he needed to obtain instructions from his client before responding to questions from the Star.

In an email late Tuesday night, lawyer Jack Siegel, who represents both Singh and Smith, said he is trying to “secure a timely date for hearing.”  (more...)
