Ontario ombud reviews police de-escalation guidelines in wake of TTC shooting

TORONTO - Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin has announced Thursday his office will investigate the training given police officers to de-escalate dangerous situations after 18-year-old Sammy Yatim was shot nine times in a streetcar standoff with officers last month.

And in a surprise twist, Marin identified a Durham Regional Police Officer as the source of tweets suggesting he’s a card-carrying member of the terrorist group al-Qaida and confirmed that he has received death threats in the last few months.

“It happens,” Marin said of the hostile messages, saying he doesn’t believe the incidents are related to his latest investigation.  (more...)
