Does McGill University deny that Palestinians have a right to resist Israel's genocide?

Canada Montreal McGill University Palestine solidarity encampment administration intransigence deflection student activism disclose divest declare resistance Gaza genocide complicity

Two months ago, students at McGill University in Montreal, Canada established an encampment to demand that the university divest from corporations, including arms manufacturers, that are complicit in Israel's genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people.

In June, participants of the camp posted online a photo of armed Palestinians and called for students to participate in a "revolutionary youth summer program" on campus. When they learned of the photo, Zionist lobby groups erupted in indignation.

Their reaction prompted a harsh denunciation from McGill's President, Deep Saini, who thundered "This is extremely alarming. It has attracted international media attention, and many in our community have understandably reached out to express grave concerns — concerns that I share."

On July 1 (Canada Day), Dimitri Lascaris visited the McGill encampment and interviewed a spokesperson for the encampment. Her name is Zaina, and she is a third-year student at McGill. Zaina is of Palestinian origin and a citizen of Israel.

Among other things, Zaina and Lascaris discussed the reaction of McGill's administration to the photo of Palestinians bearing arms.
