Judge jails ex-army major who looted Rockcliffe school parent council account

The fall from grace for a former Canadian Forces major who swindled more than $65,000 from a school in one of the city’s wealthiest neighbourhood’s was completed in an Ottawa courtroom Monday.

Mark MacDonald, once a senior officer serving alongside now retired Lt. Gen. Andrew Leslie, was sentenced to six months behind bars — the final chapter in the downfall of the once highly respected and educated former military man who pleaded guilty two years ago to fraud.

MacDonald admitted to using his volunteer position as treasurer on the Rockcliffe Park Public School council to drain money from a bank account meant to pay for pizza, milk and after-school daycare. The money was used instead to fund what his lawyer described as an “out-of-control and reckless” addiction to alcohol, made worse by his undiagnosed mood disorder and depression.

MacDonald, 53, who served with distinction in Germany, Cyprus and Bosnia-Herzegovina, has been reduced to working for minimum wage at Walmart or in telephone call-centres.  (more...)
