While I was away, I spent some time reading about propaganda. Then, after re-downloading the social media apps I had deleted last week, I saw what I’d argue is a propaganda-fuelled smear campaign in action.
Mohamad Fakih is the CEO of Paramount Fine Foods and a philanthropist. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2022, which is an honour that recognizes “outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.”
He’s also been an outspoken advocate for the human rights of Palestinians in the face of the ongoing genocide.
That was a bridge too far for some former politicians, who decided to launch a campaign against him to have him stripped of his Order of Canada.
They launched their campaign after Israel killed another five journalists on August 25, including Hossam al-Masri, a photojournalist for Reuters. As rescue crews rushed to the scene to help, Israel launched another missile — hitting the rescuers.
It was in response to this that Mohamad spoke out once again, condemning any Canadians who are supporting Israel’s actions as lacking in human or Canadian values.
Despite his clarifications, this post was enough for a vicious campaign to be launched — with the help of some journalists who have something interesting in common.
