‘Perfect storm’ means painful cuts for Toronto’s Catholic school board

I understand the anxiety levels are high
Toronto’s Catholic board is looking at cutting more than 300 jobs — most of them teaching positions — as it faces a $42.55-million budget shortfall.

Beginning with chopping all of its 57 primary and junior literacy intervention teachers as well as its remaining 45 teacher-librarians — replacing them with lesser-educated library technicians, who earn roughly half the salary — the board is also considering reducing the number of teachers who serve the neediest special education students.

The loss of the 304.5 full-time equivalent positions, starting this fall, will save $29.87 million; the board must still find a further $12.68 million in cuts.  (more...)
