As calls for dramatic reforms of U.S. police departments have swept the country in recent months, several of Silicon Valley’s largest companies have tried to salvage their image by asserting that they will no longer sell their facial recognition software to police departments. Among these companies is Amazon, which decided to place a one-year pause on the sale of its software “Rekognition” to U.S. police departments in early June.
At the time the moratorium was announced, The New York Times noted that “the announcement was a striking change for Amazon…” due to the fact that, “more than other big technology companies, Amazon has resisted calls to slow its deployment.” Amazon’s resistance to the widespread adoption of its facial recognition software gained notoriety after a study found that Rekognition falsely tied 28 members of Congress, most of whom were politicians of color, to mugshots, causing critics to accuse Amazon’s product of both racial bias and inaccuracy.
However, what The Times and other outlets failed to pick up on, then and now, is the fact that Amazon’s Rekognition is still being supplied to U.S. police, despite its official moratorium. Indeed, U.S. law enforcement agencies are still being offered Amazon’s facial recognition software by a NGO partnered with Amazon that was created by actor Ashton Kutcher, who frequently co-invests with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.
That NGO, called “Thorn,” continues to supply the controversial software to law enforcement agencies around the country under the guise of helping police “combat child trafficking.” Thorn’s role in supplying such software to law enforcement despite moratoriums is also notable because its founder Ashton Kutcher has publicly and “tearfully” supported Black Lives Matter amid the recent protests that provoked Amazon’s moratorium on sales of Rekognition to police in the first place. In addition, Kutcher is also a major investor, alongside Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, in a company that supplies AI-powered software to law enforcement agencies, further undermining Kutcher’s professed support for ending racial inequities in policing.
Yet, further investigation into Thorn casts even greater doubt on its professed altruistic objectives, given the organization’s ties to CIA cut-outs, Wall Street banks and another “anti-child trafficking” organization that was launched by Hillary Clinton and Cherie Blair, the wife of former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair. “This is child abuse,” he declared during an interview with journalist Margarita Bityutski. As reported at RAIR, Germans are appalled at the ways the German government is using the coronavirus to impose arbitrary policies having nothing to do with sound science echoing trends throughout the West.
The attorney, who represents citizens through a non-profit legal organization, states that the law as written allows for very little legal recourse for parents, whose children can be removed and placed in “forced isolation” in a government facility. “Of course I don’t think it is legally acceptable in any way and it is completely excessive,” Haintz stated. “It leaves one speechless and I’m not sure if the authorities are aware of what they have done,” he continued.
The attorney further stated that the testing itself is “non-validated,” yet determines whether children will be put in forced isolation in their homes. TOM BOWER has conducted an exhaustive and meticulous survey of all the relevant files in the British Foreign and War offices and in the American State and War departments in order to assess the efforts of the Allies to punish the Nazis for the murder of 12 million people during World War II and to set up a postwar ''denazification'' program. Mr. Bower concludes that on both counts these efforts were stupendous failures.
Many villains and incompetents are revealed in this book, and hardly any heroes. Only Gen. Lucius Clay, the American military governor in Germany after the war, and Patrick Dean, a British Foreign Service officer, who was later British Ambassador to Washington, seem to qualify as heroes, at least by Mr. Bower's stern standards.
Mr. Bower is not a historian but a producer for BBC television. Four programs of his on the failure of the Allied policies concerning war crimes and denazification have provoked considerable controversy in England.
Clearly, the civil servants in the Foreign Office and the State Department took a detached view of how the Nazi criminals should be punished, and they wanted no responsibility for planning a program for Germany once the war had ended. In fact, there was no kind of intelligent planning by any of the Allied nations as long as the war continued, despite the policy of Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt that retribution for the war crimes ''must henceforth take its place among the major purposes of the war,'' as Churchill said in October 1942. “Bipartisan” Washington Insiders Reveal Their Plan for Chaos if Trump Wins the Election
A group of “bipartisan” neoconservative Republicans and establishment Democrats have been “simulating” multiple catastrophic scenarios for the 2020 election, including a simulation where a clear victory by the incumbent provokes “unprecedented” measures, which the Biden campaign could take to foil a new Trump inauguration.
A group of Democratic Party insiders and former Obama and Clinton era officials as well as a cadre of “Never Trump” neoconservative Republicans have spent the past few months conducting simulations and “war games” regarding different 2020 election “doomsday” scenarios.
Per several media reports on the group, called the Transition Integrity Project (TIP), they justify these exercises as specifically preparing for a scenario where President Trump loses the 2020 election and refuses to leave office, potentially resulting in a constitutional crisis. However, according to TIP’s own documents, even their simulations involving a “clear win” for Trump in the upcoming election resulted in a constitutional crisis, as they predicted that the Biden campaign would make bold moves aimed at securing the presidency, regardless of the election result.
This is particularly troubling given that TIP has considerable ties to the Obama administration, where Biden served as Vice President, as well as several groups that are adamantly pro-Biden in addition to the Biden campaign itself. Indeed, the fact that a group of openly pro-Biden Washington insiders and former government officials have gamed out scenarios for possible election outcomes and their aftermath, all of which either ended with Biden becoming president or a constitutional crisis, suggest that powerful forces influencing the Biden campaign are pushing the former Vice President to refuse to concede the election even if he loses.
This, of course, gravely undercuts the TIP’s claim to be ensuring “integrity” in the presidential transition process and instead suggests that the group is openly planning on how to ensure that Trump leaves office regardless of the result or to manufacture the very constitutional crisis they claim to be preventing through their simulations.
Such concerns are only magnified by the recent claims made by the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State under Obama, Hillary Clinton, that Biden “should not concede under any circumstances.” “I think this is going to drag out, and eventually I do believe he will win if we don’t give an inch, and if we are as focused and relentless as the other side is,” Clinton continued during an interview with Showtime a little over a week ago. The results of the TIP’s simulations notably echo Clinton’s claims that Biden will “eventually” win if the process to determine the election outcome is “dragged out.” (more...)
