Teacher guilty of Northumberland County sex crime returns to Cobourg court

NORTHUMBERLAND — A former teacher and church volunteer who once lived in Northumberland County was recently found guilty of sexual exploitation and returns to Cobourg court for sentencing on Feb. 22.

Matthew Dale Palmer, 49, currently of the Owen Sound area, was found guilty by a jury Oct. 21 of sexually exploiting a local teenage girl on seven occasions from 1996 to 1999, beginning when the girl was 14. He lived in Northumberland at the time of the offences.

The Criminal Code of Canada states that sexual exploitation is when a person in a position of trust or authority touches or invites a minor to touch the person in a sexual manner.

Palmer appeared for sentencing in a Cobourg courtroom on Friday, Jan. 27, where Justice Christopher Corkery rescheduled his decision to Feb. 22 after hearing a full day of closing remarks from the Crown and Palmer’s defence counsel.

The Crown is seeking nine months in jail with 18 months probation.

The defence is seeking a 12-month conditional sentence to be spent under house arrest.

“This is the type of offence that deserves jail time,” Crown attorney Deirdre Bryant said.

At the time of Palmer’s arrest on Aug. 27, 2014, the complainant alleged seven incidents of sexual touching occurred at various locations over a period of about two-and-a-half years. Court heard that those included during a trip to Washington, on a bus ride, and watching Sound of Music in the complainant’s basement. The incidents of sexual touching included, 'heavy petting,' 'groping' of genital areas and 'kissing and embracing.'  (more...)

Brussels has been accused of “bending the rules” in its pursuit of Apple for €13 billion in taxes it says should have been paid in Ireland. But in truth it is the multinationals and their corporate lawyers and accountants who have twisted the rules on taxation almost out of existence.

The tax system had been “captured” by the tax avoidance industry. Multinationals were paying less and less tax and states were reduced to tax wars against each other in failing efforts to attract them.

The public needed a champion to restore some order on the chaos and it got it in Margrethe Vestager, the European commissioner for competition. CRA offshore tax tip line nets $1M in reassessments, penalties

The Canada Revenue Agency's offshore tax evasion tip line has resulted in signed contracts with more than 20 informants and more than $1 million in tax reassessments and penalties.

The tips have also resulted in audits of 218 Canadian taxpayers, some of which have been completed and some of which are still being conducted.

However, the tax agency has yet to pay out a cent in reward money to any of its informants. Under the rules of the program, the CRA only pays out the reward of between five and 15 per cent once the additional tax flagged by the informant is collected.

The former Conservative government introduced the Offshore Tax Informant Program (OTIP) in January 2014 in an attempt to fight offshore tax evasion and aggressive tax avoidance. Governments around the world have found themselves under pressure to curb offshore tax evasion following high-profile leaks of offshore tax records such as the Panama Papers and banking records from Liechtenstein that have shed light on the extent of the money involved.

Under the program, someone who wants to blow the whistle on offshore tax evasion contacts the CRA. The CRA then evaluates the merits of the case and sends it to an oversight committee of senior management. If the committee approves, the CRA signs a contract with the informant.  (more...)

‘Enormous’ spike in hate crime reports in Montreal since mosque attack

MONTREAL — An “enormous number” of alleged hate crimes have been reported in Montreal in the wake of Sunday’s shooting massacre at a mosque in Quebec City, officials say.

On Wednesday, the head of Montreal’s anti-radicalization centre told the city’s executive committee that the centre had received 24 calls since Sunday, including 10 related to Islamophobia and four related to the extreme right.

Herman Deparice-Okomba said four of those cases had been transferred to police.

“It (24) is an enormous number in 72 hours,” he said.

Deparice-Okomba’s comments echoed those of Montreal police Chief Philippe Pichet, who told reporters the day prior that the force had also seen a spike in the number of reported hate crimes since the mosque attack.  (more...)

The biggest systems of this order are NATO and the EU, but now, because of dramatic changes in political climate, happening on account of mass immigration and economic predicaments, the world order established after World War Two, is fragmenting. With the disintegration of the world order, will come new unions, and new alliances formed under militaristic and expansionist aspirations.
