Freedom flotilla solidarity from Toronto

Dundas Square Toronto Canada Palestine solidarity Madleen freedom flotilla seizure kidnapping repression humanitarian aid Israel Gaza starvation

Hundreds gathered at Dundas Square the night after a boat full of humanitarian activists were taken into custody by Israel. Among the activists is Greta Thunberg and Rima Hassan, a French member of European parliament.

The Madleen had planned to deliver a symbolic amount of aid to Gaza, including baby formula and rice, and draw international attention to the humanitarian crisis.

The United Nations has warned that Gaza’s entire population faces “catastrophic hunger” following nearly two years of war and over two months in which Israel has been blocking or heavily restricting the entry of food and other essential supplies.

The Israeli navy intercepted and illegally seized the Madleen in international waters when it was about 185km (100 nautical miles) from Gaza, before detaining the 12 activists on board.

“By forcibly intercepting and blocking the Madleen, which was carrying humanitarian aid and a crew of solidarity activists, Israel has once again flouted its legal obligations towards civilians in the occupied Gaza Strip,” said Amnesty International.
