Night of the Long Knives: School board bosses face salary cut next week

The director of education and a number of senior staff at the Toronto school board whose salaries don’t comply with a public sector wage freeze will see their pay cut starting next week.

And trustees will see their expense accounts knocked back to either $9,000 each or equal to their Catholic counterparts at $11,780 — down from $27,000 — under plans that still have to be approved at a full board meeting before a Feb. 13 deadline imposed by Ontario’s minister of education.

Toronto District School Board trustees also have until the end of this week to provide proof they have fired their assistants, which was also ordered by Education Minister Liz Sandals after a report she commissioned was heavily critical of staff and elected officials on a number of fronts. That alone will remove $18,000 from each trustee’s discretionary spending.

Sandals gave the board 13 directives it must comply with by Feb. 13, and trustees at a committee meeting Tuesday were provided with progress that has been made so far on each one.  (more...)
