Alleged child porn king admits he had illegal images but denies they were for sale

Whatever else, it appears it can be fairly said of Brian Way that he loved his work.

The 43-year-old Toronto man is an alleged child porn king, charged with 17 counts of making, advertising, publishing, selling and distributing child pornography, all from a nondescript Etobicoke office building.

In addition, usually if not for the first time for an alleged child pornographer, Mr. Way is also charged with doing it all for the benefit of a criminal organization.

That alleged organization included a full-time film editor, Brandon Donnelly, who last summer pleaded guilty in Toronto to one count of making child pornography, and Mr. Way’s mother, Sandra Waslov.

Mr. Way is pleading not guilty to all these offences.

But at the same time he entered these pleas before Ontario Superior Court Judge Julie Thorburn in a judge-alone proceeding Monday, he also pleaded guilty to seven other charges of possessing and making available child pornography. Among the photos were searing images of a very young boy in Spider-Man pyjamas engaged in oral sex with an adult man and a toddler in a diaper being fondled.

These pictures, downloaded by Paul Krawczyk, an undercover Toronto Police detective, between the fall of 2010 and early 2011, were part of Mr. Way’s enormous personal child porn collection — more than 250,000 photos and 10,000 videos — on his home computer, laptop and hard drive.

Det. Krawczyk’s early work kicked off a police investigation that ended with the smashing of what was described at the time as the largest commercial child pornography ring in Canada and which ultimately led to the arrests of hundreds of men from across the world.

Indeed, the trial of one of Mr. Way’s alleged customers, a former Social Democratic politician named Sebastian Edathy, also began in Verden, Germany, Monday.  (more...)
