Kincora victims take legal action over paedophile psychiatrist failures

VICTIMS of abuse at Kincora boys' home are taking legal action following fresh claims of state failures over a paedophile psychiatrist in Belfast.

A new academic study highlights that Dr Morris Fraser was allowed to continue working with children after being convicted of child abuse in the 1970s.

Fraser was a senior psychiatric registrar at the Royal Victoria Hospital's child guidance clinic, and a published author on the impact of the Troubles on children.

A new study, by Dublin academic Dr Niall Meehan, examines alleged failures by the authorities that enabled Fraser to continue working.

It claims the RUC, Metropolitan Police and General Medical Council (GMC) withheld important information about the child abuser from the public.  (more...)

Child Sexual Abuse in Community Rampant, Audience Told

Meyer Seewald, co-founder of Jewish Community Watch
Jews must put aside fear of shaming their community, their families and themselves, as well as perceived prohibitions of turning to secular authorities, to fight a growing wave of child sexual abuse, speakers told an audience at Shaarei Shomayim Congregation.

Speakers addressing a packed sanctuary on March 31 made blunt, often harrowing assessments of childhood sexual abuse in Jewish communities, saying the problem is rampant and is too often ignored or denied outright.

There was a large Orthodox contingent in attendance, and speakers stressed that Orthodox and chassidic communities offer much resistance to dealing with the sexual abuse of children. It is time to end the silence, they said.

MC Benny Forer, a graduate of Ner Israel Yeshiva north of Toronto, and now a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles,  recounted how his best friend had been sexually abused and killed himself on Yom Kippur in 1993.

There is an “astonishing” amount of sexual abuse in Jewish circles, Forer said. “We have to stand up and say this is unacceptable.”  (more...)

Ontario teachers’ unions call on minister to apologize over sick-days comment

The heads of two teachers’ unions are demanding that the Ontario Education Minister apologize for suggesting teachers are abusing their sick days plan.

Responding to a Globe and Mail story about a report that said sick days are increasing, Education Minister Liz Sandals told reporters earlier this week that Ontario teachers are taking more sick days because they lost the right to bank them for a cash payout upon retirement.

“There’s no reason to believe that they’re actually sicker than they were two years ago,” Ms. Sandals said.

Paul Elliott, president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, called Ms. Sandals’s statements “provocative, presumptuous and completely unsubstantiated.”

“Her comments demonstrated a lack of respect for the dedication displayed every day by Ontario’s education workers,” he said in a statement on Thursday. “We hope the Minister will learn to more carefully consider her public musings in the future.”

Sam Hammond, president of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, also took issue with Ms. Sandals’ words.

“Minister of Ed should publicly apologize to teachers in this prov for her unacceptable & unfounded comments,” he said on Twitter.  (more...)

Margaret Wilson paid $1,200 a day for TDSB report

Margaret Wilson, appointed by the province to look into dysfunction at the Toronto school board, was paid $1,200 a day for her work, according to documents obtained by the Star through a Freedom of Information request.

As part of her final $48,034 bill, Wilson listed 40 work days in November and December of 2014, and January 2015.

Based on an eight-hour workday, that works out to $150 an hour; for a 12-hour workday, $100 an hour.

“Review of TDSB: 68 interviews, read board + ministry documents, correspondence, previous reviews + audits & copious emails. Wrote report,” she noted in the expense form submitted to the education ministry.  (more...)

Black Lives Matter stage vigil outside Premier Inclusivity's home

Not Kathleen's kind of  "equality"?
Members of the Black Lives Matter movement in Toronto organized a demonstration outside Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s home on Thursday night, prompting huge police presence in the neighbourhood.

Police were called to Wynne’s home in north Toronto on Friday after several items were discarded on her front lawn, a police source told CP24. The items included flowers and a small tent.

Black Lives Matter Toronto released a statement confirming their presence outside Wynne’s home. The statement said that members of the movement left a wreath and a photo of Andrew Loku, the South Sudanese migrant who was shot dead by a Toronto police officer in July 2015, as part of their on-going demonstrations.

The release said that Premier Wynne has “ignored” the incident and ultimately the black community.

“The decision makers to whom we have submitted our demands to, including Kathleen Wynne, continue to ignore the Black community and thousands of people who support us,” movement co-founder Sandy Hudson said in the release. “So we have no choice but to bring our actions to them. Eleven straight days of protest and our Premier has said nothing. That is a shame.”  (more...)

Female teacher with Ottawa Catholic School Board charged with sexual assault on student

A 30-year-old female teacher at Mother Teresa High School in Barrhaven is facing sex charges after allegedly being involved in a sexual relationship with one of her students.

Jessica Beraldin, who teaches intermediate grades, appeared in court Friday on charges of sexual assault, sexual exploitation and making sexually explicit material available to a child. She was released on bail after posting a $1,000 bond.

Beraldin was suspended by the board after the preliminary investigation by police. The charges date back to July 5, 2014. Police also say Beraldin allegedly sent a student sexually explicit material between Dec. 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016.

“Through the evidence that investigators found, she was on duty, so it was during her work that these incidents happened,” said Const. Chuck Benoit.

Police are also concerned that there may be more victims.  (more...)
