I have read with interest the lively discussion at Pray Tell about my book Der heilige Schein. Als schwuler Theologe in der katholischen Kirche. (“The Holy Illusion. Being a Gay Theologian in the Catholic Church,” 3 reprints within 4 weeks). After reading through all the comments, I thought it might be helpful to respond to some of the main points raised, and to expand upon the reporting provided so far.

Der Spiegel is often accused of being anti-clerical. The Catholic sexual abuse scandal in Germany has given anti-clericals a vast amount of material to work with. But Der Spiegel is also willing to tell the truth about corruption in the liberal icons of society, in this case the revolutionaries of 1968 and their sexual abuse of children — of course abuse motivated by the purest ideological motives.

The 68ers wanted to get rid of all inhibition and repression, including the repression of sexual contact between adults and children. Sexual liberation was at the top of the agenda of the young revolutionaries who, in 1967, began turning society upside down. The control of sexual desire was seen as an instrument of domination, which bourgeois society used to uphold its power. Everything that the innovators perceived as wrong and harmful has its origins in this concept: man’s aggression, greed and desire to own things, as well as his willingness to submit to authority. The student radicals believed that only those who liberated themselves from sexual repression could be truly free. 

To them, it seemed obvious that liberation should begin at an early age.  (more...)

The Canadian television station Salt and Light has decided to use the account of a third epoch in the history of the Church developed by the famous theologian Karl Rahner, S.J. (1904-1984) as a way of describing the current pontificate. As Fr. Thomas Rosica, C.S.B., director of Salt and Light and top English-language officer of the Holy See Press Office, puts it in an interview with America:

Gay foundation gives Dignity USA $200,000 to oppose Catholic teaching at synod

A pro-gay foundation has given a $200,000 grant to Dignity USA, an organization devoted to promoting Catholic acceptance of homosexuality, to “counter the narrative of the Catholic Church” on same-sex relationships in the next two years as the Church undergoes its Synod on the Family and prepares for World Youth Day in Kraków, Poland in 2016.

The Arcus Foundation, which was founded in 2000 to promote both same-sex "marriage" and the “rights and intrinsic value of the great apes,” lists the 2014 grant on its website. The grant description states:

Two years of funding to support pro-LGBT faith advocates to influence and counter the narrative of the Catholic Church and its ultra-conservative affiliates in regard to LGBT rights and dignity within and outside of the church. The effort will build advocacy and visibility in connection with two special events, the Synod of the Family and World Youth Day  (more...)

$100,000 to close the sexual abuse lawsuit

Michael Egan III, the child model who accused several Hollywood figures of sexually abusing him, accepted a $100,000 settlement from X-Men director Bryan Singer only to back out at the 11th hour, it has emerged.

The strange manoeuvre is said to have cost Egan his lawyer.

Egan recently dropped three lawsuits against other men he claimed abused him during a trip to Hawaii in 1999 when he was 17, leaving only Singer.

TMZ reports that Egan's lawyer, Jeff Herman, approached Singer's lawyer, Marty Singer, offering to drop the case for

It also notes that a $100K settlement payment would be far less than Singer would spend in legal fees defending against the claims and would be viewed as a nuisance payment.

However, after the settlement was signed, Egan changed his mind and reneged, according to the tabloid site.

'This exact kind of take-it-and-shut-up deal is why I decided to stand up in the first place,' he said.  (more...)

UK: Historic abuse cases fuel rise in prison population

Stuart Hall, Max Clifford and Rolf Harris are among figures to be jailed in recent months

The number of sex attackers behind bars has doubled in only a decade – with eight jails now containing no other type of inmate.

The huge increase has in part been fuelled by convictions in historic abuse cases.

In recent months, high-profile figures – including Stuart Hall, Max Clifford and Rolf Harris – have been imprisoned for crimes dating back decades.

Prison officials have had to set up a string of new programmes to cope with the explosion in the sex offender population – which now stands at 11,150.

It is the equivalent of one in every eight inmates and has leapt by 650 in the past year alone.

A total of eight jails have been converted or opened that are exclusively for paedophiles, rapists and other sex offenders.  (more...)
