Recent reports by the New York Times, the UN, and human rights groups have documented Israel's widespread rape of Palestinian detainees in its prisons amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza
The UN is expected to announce that Israel has been added to its “blacklist” of perpetrators of sexual violence in conflict zones, Ynet reported on 28 May.
“One of the bodies expected to be included is the Israel Prison Service, alongside other Israeli authorities that have been placed under monitoring for possible future inclusion,” the Hebrew news outlet wrote.
Human rights and media organizations have documented hundreds of testimonies from Palestinians detailing their torture, rape, and sexual abuse while held in Israeli prisons and detention centers.
Israeli officials described the decision to add Israel to the list as a “political decision” and announced they would freeze relations with the office of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
