Canada has finally said it will acknowledge a Palestinian state, in September, if certain conditions are met.
But what does this actually mean?
Right off the bat, I want to note something important: they made this announcement the day after a bombshell report dropped, which exposes hundreds of Canadian arms shipments to Israel.
Their announcement also comes with strings attached. Some of those strings are harder to abide by than others — and all of them make Palestinians’ right to self-determination conditional.
I wanted to better understand what all of this means. So I reached out to a doctor who has previously been on the ground in Gaza, a journalist who has covered this issue extensively, the former secretary general for Amnesty International Canada, and one of the authors of that recent damning report.
They all either sent me statements or gave me permission to use their public comments on this.
And a few things became clear:
The recognition of a Palestinian state, with incredibly difficult strings attached, as Canadian arms have been sent to Israel and as Palestinians, children, babies, are starving en masse right now due to a Israeli-instituted and enforced blockade?
It all makes this feel less like something to be celebrated, and more like something that — as journalist Sana Saeed put it, is “performative bullshit.”
Reminder: All this talk of “recognizing a Palestinian state” is performative bullshit. It means absolutely nothing when these same governments are arming, funding, and defending the ongoing extermination of Palestinians and the theft of their land.

This isn’t recognition - this… https://t.co/PduEtN06v9
