It’s a story many have been waiting for, wanting to see the outcome of a Park teacher charged with sexual interference of a minor. Now I’m just disappointed with a flawed system.
Brett Mittelsteadt, 33, was convicted on Monday to sexual interference of a person under 16, and luring a child under 16 for the purpose of facilitating a sexual offence. The incidents took place in 2013 and 2014 when Mittelsteadt taught at Holy Spirit school.
Upon entering a guilty plea, the judge handed Mittelsteadt a two-year prison sentence, along with placing him on the national sex offender registry for life.
That’s not enough.
Mittelsteadt was in a position of power. Not only was he a teacher, but he was also the victim’s basketball coach and was a close friend of the girl’s family.
Justice Brian Burrows told the court that Mittelsteadt’s conduct must be “strongly” denounced and deterred. Well, Justice, you fell short of that mark.
Two years isn’t enough. (more...)
