At least, according to the rhetoric on its website, it does.
The TDSB claims it is “... a leader in bullying prevention and intervention ...” and that it is “committed to creating school learning environments that are caring, safe, peaceful, nurturing, positive and respectful.” But I guess what’s good for the schools, is not good enough for school trustees, because the actions of some of them — especially of late — suggest they are anything but anti-bullying when it comes to their own behaviour.
In 2008, a board-ordered task force into school violence headed by lawyer Julian Falconer found a “culture of fear, or culture of silence, permeates through every level of the TDSB,” right up to the trustee level, when it came to reporting and addressing student disciplinary issues.
Some trustees were criticized for interfering with disciplinary hearings for students, where they clearly did not belong.
School staffs expressed fear that even reporting incidents of student violence and other unacceptable behaviour could derail their careers. (more...)
