I. NIHILO: Has the reader even been overwhelmed with the current state of the Church and world affairs such that you eventually reach a point of total inertia, physically and mentally? But hopefully you get my point. Your host has undergone a greater-than-normal world weariness over the last few months, which explains the nothingness of longer-than-normal breaks between article postings. Work and personal responsibilities, very involved, have also encroached. Peace these days only comes from the Holy Mass and when I pray to the Blessed Virgin. Most everything else, self-directed activities, seem a waste.  As indicated in the top-right corner of this blog, Essaying, Assailing and Assessing heresy/apostasy in CanChurch to the extent done in this space saps ones fortitude, like having my brain sucked out with a vacuum cleaner. Yes, I'm complaining and, yes, I shouldn't and, yes, I deserve reprimand for doing so.  (more...)

Blonde German housewife Erna Petri was returning home after a shopping trip in town when something caught her eye: six small, nearly naked boys huddled in terror by the side of the country road.

Married to a senior SS officer, the 23-year-old knew instantly who they were.

They must be the Jews she’d heard about — the ones who’d escaped from a train taking them to an extermination camp.

But she was a mother herself, with two children of her own. So she humanely took the starving, whimpering youngsters home, calmed them down and gave them food to eat.

Then she led the six of them — the youngest aged six, the oldest 12 — into the woods, lined them up on the edge of a pit and shot them methodically one by one with a pistol in the back of the neck.  (more...)

Scientists trying to defeat blob of algae in Lake Erie

LONDON, Ont. -- Lake Erie has become a house of horrors haunted by floating blobs and dead zones.

But it'll only get worse unless governments on both sides of the border crack down on practices that threaten the lake, observers warn.

"There's no reason to predict anything else," said Raj Bejankiwar, a scientist with an international commission whose task sounds like something straight out of science fiction: Defeat the blob.

Algae blobs were first spotted a decade ago in Erie, but one grew so big -- about the size of Prince Edward Island -- it caused fear among those living along the lake's western shore.

"It was like putting green slime on the water. The whole western basin was covered in it," said Bill Peterson, a civic politician in Kingsville, Ont., near Windsor.

The blob grew to more than 5,000 sq. km. If the sight didn't scare you, the smell did: Peterson said it smelled like rotting fish.  (more...)

A man claiming to be a Toronto fashion photographer who police say offered free photo shoots to female university students has been charged with sexual assault in connection with a July 2012 investigation.

Bo Zou, 34, is alleged to have assaulted an 18-year-old woman near Dundas Street East and Dalhousie Street, just south of the Ryerson University campus, on July 30, 2012. Police believe Mr. Zou operates under the business avatar of Jay Dreamcollector.

Mr. Zou was arrested and scheduled to make his first court appearance at College Park on Monday.  (more...)

Self-styled Toronto ‘fashion photographer’ charged with sexual assault after offering free photo shoots

'Straight-only' sorority proposal stirs up Smith College

Delta Gamma officials don't know who wrote the now-viral e-mail proposing an all-straight "sorority" at Smith College in Northampton, Mass., but they say it's certainly not happening.

In the e-mail — which was originally posted and later removed on Tumblr by another Smith student known as "aQuieterRioter" — the unidentified author invited her classmates to help her create an "exclusive" chapter of Delta Gamma for "straight girls" with planned activities such as "sorority mixers with Amherst men, weekly dinner dates, weekly photo shoots where we would dress up nice [and] baking nights."

The self-identifying heterosexual student wrote in the e-mail that she felt "marginalized" at the women's college of 2,600 and that the straight-only sorority could be a "really great way to socialize with people we identify more with at Smith."

The e-mail quickly went viral, making the rounds on Buzzfeed, Tumblr and Slate, among others.  (more...)
