Subsidizing The Occupation is a project created by The Maple’s opinion editor, Davide Mastracci, documenting how a network of Canadian charities has subsidized the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
Hundreds of charities in Canada send money to Israel each year, making it the top foreign recipient of charitable Canadian funds in seven of the 10 years between 2013 and 2022, with more than $2 billion sent in total. At least some of these charities send money that will be used for purposes that the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has found violate Canadian law and, in some cases, international law.
Some of these charities have received significant critical attention in recent decades due to the tireless work of many groups and individuals. This project is possible thanks to the work they’ve done, but also expands on it.
Past work on charitable donations to Israel has mainly focused on the charities sending money there. This project refers to those charities as top-level charities. What past research has not publicly examined in great detail, however, is where top-level charities get their money.
The Maple created a list of top-level charities that sent money to Israel that, according to the CRA, contributed to at least one of the following aspects of its occupation of Palestine: the illegal settlements and the military. Then, The Maple obtained a list from the CRA of every charity that donated any amount to at least one of these top-level charities during the calendar years of the audit period in which the CRA identified its contribution to the Israeli occupation. This project refers to those charities as second-level charities. (more...)
