Time to check Wynne’s numbers

Education Minister Liz Sandals, left, with Premier Kathleen Wynne.
Premier Kathleen Wynne and Education Minister Liz Sandals insist their last round of labour negotiations with Ontario’s teacher unions saved taxpayers $1.8 billion.

But realistically, how can the public know if that’s true?

The Liberals said the cost of canceling their unpopular Mississauga gas plant prior to the 2011 election was $190 million.

Instead, the auditor general found it was $275 million.

The Liberals said the cost of canceling their unpopular Oakville gas plant prior to the 2011 election was $40 million.

Months later, the Ontario Power Authority put it at $310 million.

Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk is expected to release her report on the costs — which many believe will be higher — within weeks.
