While Ruth Marshall's comments were widely characterized as having concerned Charlie Kirk, evidence suggests a different context

A building housing several humanities departments at the University of Toronto has been shut down until Monday, following an intense backlash against a professor whose office is located there.

The professor, Ruth Marshall, who is reportedly now on leave, had tweeted comments that media platforms and activists on the right and far right had interpreted as celebrating the death of Charlie Kirk.

According to an email sent to faculty in the building by a department head Thursday afternoon, “U of T has made the decision to shut down the Jackman Humanities Building (170 St. George St.) for the remainder of today, Sept. 11, 2025, and tomorrow, Sept. 12, 2025 out of an abundance of caution following online comments. The building will be closed until Monday and Campus Safety is on location.”

A message on the university’s UTogether community webpage echoed this, and added that staff, faculty and students working and studying in the building were being “asked to leave and work from home or elsewhere for these two days.”

Classes at the Jackman Humanities Building were cancelled, relocated or moved online. A sign at the building’s entrance on Friday indicated that it was “locked.”  (more...)
