Palestine Talks: In Conversation with Francesca Albanese

Freedom of expression in Israel is facing unprecedented challenges. Over the past 16 months, Israel has launched legal actions and police probes against academics, journalists, activists and artists, particularly Palestinian citizens of Israel. Critics say this crackdown has intensified since the start of the war on Gaza.Francesca Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, shares how life changed for her since Israel began its genocidal assault on Gaza on October 7, 2023.

She also illuminates the dehumanising media coverage of the Palestinian people that she’s observed during this time, and how informed by long standing racism against them, it fails to responsibly address the sheer and colossal criminality of the Israeli regime.

On a more positive note, Albanese discusses the link between her Italian upbringing and developing genuine compassion which, beyond mere charity, extends to partaking in the larger struggle of Palestinian self-determination.
