The Winnipeg Art Gallery and its former director Ferdinand Eckhardt have been caught in the crosshairs of Russia's propaganda machine.

In a Jan. 31 briefing translated into English and posted online by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, spokesperson Maria Zakharova highlighted recent stories about Eckhardt's past as a Nazi supporter.

"Canadian authorities have been harbouring Nazis and their Ukrainian accomplices who served Hitler in various positions for years," she said.

"The Eckhardt incident has perfectly exposed the hypocrisy and double standards of the liberal-globalist elite ruling in Canada and their pro-neo-Nazi nature, something they will not be able to refute now."

Eckhardt became a celebrated member of the Canadian arts scene after he was named director of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, despite his past as a member of the German army during the Second World War.

Russia has claimed its invasion of Ukraine is a war against Nazism.  (more...)
