Perspective: How the Nazis engineered a paedophile priests scare
“There are cases of sexual abuse that come to light every day against a large number of members of the Catholic clergy. Unfortunately it’s not a matter of individual cases, but a collective moral crisis that perhaps the cultural history of humanity has never before known with such a frightening and disconcerting dimension. Numerous priests and religious have confessed. There’s no doubt that the thousands of cases which have come to the attention of the justice system represent only a small fraction of the true total, given that many molesters have been covered and hidden by the hierarchy.”An editorial from a great secular newspaper in 2010? No: It’s a speech of May 28, 1937, by Joseph Goebbels (1897-1945), Minister of Propaganda for the Third Reich. This speech, which had a large international echo, was the apex of a campaign launched by the Nazi regime to discredit the Catholic Church by involving it in a scandal of pedophile priests.
Two hundred and seventy-six religious and forty-nine diocesan priests were arrested in 1937. The arrests took place in all the German dioceses, in order to keep the scandals on the front pages of the newspapers.
On March 10, 1937, with the encyclical Mit Brennender Sorge, Pope Pius XI (1857-1939) condemned the Nazi ideology. At the end of the same month, the Nazi Ministry of Propaganda headed by Goebbels launched a campaign against the sexual abuses of priests. The design and administration of this campaign are known to historians thanks to documents which tell a story worthy of the best spy novels. (more...)

Popular Toronto high school teacher sentenced to jail time for sex crimes against students
Three former Bishop Allen Academy students sat quietly in the back of courtroom 125 of Old City Hall court, arriving just after their former English teacher Gerry McGilly pleaded guilty to two counts of child luring, a count of making child pornography and a count of sexual exploitation.
Defence attorney Erica Dann described the case as “prolonged and intense breaches of trust on the most vulnerable victims.”
The young women, whose identities are protected under a publication ban, said they were in court to see justice done. According to the agreed statement of facts read out in court, all three victims were 17 at the time and McGilly’s students between 2014 and 2017. But none of the girls were aware McGilly was preying on others.
McGilly who had been a teacher at Bishop Allen Academy since 2009 was arrested in October 2017 after a former student came forward alleging she had been lured online by her English teacher, and that the talk and exchange of photos turning sexual. (more...)

Last Nazi war crimes suspect facing deportation in U.S. sent to Germany
The last Nazi war crimes suspect facing deportation from the United States was taken from his New York City home and spirited early Tuesday morning to Germany, the White House said.
The deportation of Jakiw Palij, a 95-year-old former concentration camp guard, came 25 years after investigators first confronted him about his Second World War past and he admitted lying to get into the U.S., claiming he spent the war as a farmer and factory worker.
Palij lived quietly in the U.S. for years, as a draftsman and then as a retiree, until nearly three decades ago when investigators found his name on an old Nazi roster and a fellow former guard spilled the secret that he was "living somewhere in America."
Palij told Justice Department investigators who showed up at his door in 1993: "I would never have received my visa if I told the truth. Everyone lied."
A judge stripped Palij's citizenship in 2003 for "participation in acts against Jewish civilians" while he was an armed guard at the Trawniki camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, and he was ordered deported a year later. (more...)

Defence wants house arrest for David Norton, Anglican priest convicted of sex abuse of boy
A former London priest convicted of sexually abusing a boy says he is "full of remorse" for his crimes while his lawyer argued for a sentence that would keep him out of jail.
David Norton, 72, pleaded guilty earlier this year to sexual interference.
The abuse happened on outings and camping trips and began when the boy was nine and continued for four years. Religious and seeking a father figure for her son, the boy's mother introduced her son to Norton, hoping he would be a positive influence.
In a victim impact statement read in court Thursday the victim, now in his 30s, said the abuse left him with difficulty forming adult relationships and struggles with drug and alcohol addiction.
The victim said he's fearful of becoming a parent himself, worried the child might fall victim to someone like Norton. (more...)

Most CRA auditors polled say Canada's tax system is skewed to protect the wealthy
The new PIPSC poll traces many of the CRA's problems to massive cuts in 2012 under the Conservative government of Stephen Harper |
A union-sponsored survey of more than 1,700 auditors and other tax professionals who work for the Canada Revenue Agency suggests that even the insiders believe the cards are stacked in favour of the rich.
Nine out of 10 surveyed agreed with this statement: "It is easier for corporations and wealthy individuals to evade and/or avoid tax responsibilities than it is for average Canadians." That's according to a summary of results released by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC), which conducted the poll.
More than eight out of 10 of those polled agreed that "tax credits, tax exemptions, and tax loopholes disproportionately benefit corporations and wealthy Canadians compared to average Canadians." And 45 per cent agreed that CRA's mandate has been "compromised by political interference" (the survey did not define the term, leaving it up to members to interpret).
The online survey, conducted between Feb. 20 and March 6, included managers, forensic accountants, economists, statisticians and actuaries — the tax professionals who generally are assigned to the accounts of large corporations and the wealthy, rather than those of average taxpayers and small businesses.
"Nobody knows better how income from all sources is assessed and turned into tax revenue," says the poll summary.
"These responses validate the widely held belief that those with the means are able to shirk their tax responsibilities while everyone else is left to pick up the slack." (more...)

Unraveling the Global Web of Corruption That’s Destroying Democracy
You probably won’t be surprised to hear we’re living in a time of global income inequality on a scale never before seen in history. Money is concentrated in the hands of an increasingly tiny number of people around the world, and they increasingly have more of it than ever. According to the 2018 World Inequality Report, the richest 0.1% of the global population have increased their combined wealth by as much as the poorest 50% since 1980. The combined net worth of all 2,208 of the world’s known billionaires is twice that of the poorest 2.5 billion people. By 2030, the richest 1% of the global population are projected to hold 64% — a full two-thirds — of the world’s wealth.
It wasn’t supposed to turn out this way. When the world’s top economists sat down in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire in 1944 to figure out how to prevent the world economy from ever again becoming as destabilized as it was in the years leading up to World War II, they envisioned a global financial system that would stop countries from manipulating their exchange rates, curtail unrestricted international cash flows, and lock speculative capital behind national borders.
And at first, financial globalization—which formed international institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, and tied currencies to the U.S. dollar, which was tied to gold — worked exactly as intended, laying the economic foundation for a period of unprecedented prosperity and stability in the second half of the 20th century.
But this is a very different century — and in the decades since Nixon deflated the dollar’s value in gold in 1971, leading to a return of the old unregulated order and our current floating exchange rates, the Bretton Woods system that was created 70 years ago has fallen apart. (more...)

Former high school teacher faces jail sentence
A former Brantford high school teacher found guilty of sexually assaulting a student was begged Monday by the victim’s father to publicly admit his guilt.
“If there is a shred of decency in you, allow (the victim) closure and further his healing by admitting what you did,” said the teenager’s father in a victim impact statement he read to the court on the first day of a two-day sentencing hearing for Shawn Oakes in the Ontario Court of Justice
Oakes, 38, was found guilty in June of sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching after a seven-day, judge-only trial.
Justice Catrina Braid read from a pre-sentence report in which the report’s author said that Oakes was ready to accept responsibilty for his crimes.
“Despite pleading not guilty throughout a trial, the subject stated he committed the offences and was going to make amends, including attending a treatment program. He plans to read a statement at his sentencing hearing,” according to the report. (more...)

Barrick's ridiculous mouthpiece |
“For Canada to treat a friend and ally this way has been incredibly unhelpful,” Baird told the English-language arm of Al Arabiya, the Saudi-owned equivalent of Al Jazeera.
Baird added that the best way to resolve the crisis would be for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to fly to Riyadh to apologize in person to the Saudi royal family.
“I think the Canadian government is only beginning to understand how offensive their conduct has been to the Saudi government,” he said. “This is giving Canada a bad reputation.” (more...)

UK: Paedophiles In Parliament
Journalist and Broadcaster Sonia Poulton explores the history of paedophile allegations in British Politics.
It should be clear that blackmail and the threat of scandal is a ubiquitous mechanism of social control in the upper reaches of the Anglo-American establishment. It should not be surprising that the clergy is riddled with this same cancer. Either the clergy must be cut away from this diseased body, or the whole body must be cleansed of its filth. It should be noted that this depravity is closely coupled to power and control, and not a necessary outgrowth of the human condition. Given a chance, a sane society strives for health, happiness, and freedom from oppression. Cast into the light, the malign cult of degeneracy can be isolated and destroyed. Let's call it The Inquisition.

Tax-break Ireland is no country for the vulnerable
THIS week saw public outrage over the treatment of two very vulnerable groups — women with cancer having to fight for justice and humility in the courts, and distressed mortgage holders offloaded to a corporate vulture fund.
Weak and vulnerable women and families are left behind clamouring for help, while ‘Ireland Inc’ and ‘big business’ elsewhere is facilitated, rewarded. Why do we do injustices so well here?
The disturbing case of Ruth Morrissey, emerging from Dublin’s Four Courts in recent days, has again highlighted the sickening dilemma faced by women caught up in the cervical cancer scandal.
Ms Morrissey is suing the HSE and laboratories over alleged misreading of her cervical smear tests.
Harrowing evidence included mention of her daughter’s plea of “Mammy, please don’t die, I love you, don’t leave me”.
Some 17 lawyers were pitted against the Limerick woman. who has been undergoing no hair as a result of chemotherapy. Ruth and husband Paul were reduced to tears in court.
After the cervical cancer controversy erupted in May, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar promised that women would not be put through this pain. The State would settle with them and then pursue labs. This hasn’t happened. (more...)

Is Oily Econo-Politics Behind Saudis’ Crude Canadian Diplomacy?
TORONTO — In a near repeat of Saudi Arabia’s feud with Qatar last year, the diplomatic spat between the Saudis and the Canadian government seems to have spiralled out of control after it began last Friday. Apparently beginning as a result of the Canadian Foreign Ministry’s decision to criticize via Twitter the Saudi government’s arrest of the sister of detained Saudi activist Raif Badawi, the days since have seen the Saudis expel the Canadian ambassador, suspend flights to Canada, recall around 15,000 Saudi students studying abroad, and freeze new trade and investment in Canada, among other measures.
The most disturbing exchange between the two countries took place on Monday when a Saudi state-sponsored Twitter account tweeted a graphic appearing to show an Air Canada airliner heading toward the Toronto skyline in a way similar to the September 11th attacks, in a gesture that seemed to imply that the Saudis would target Canada for its “interference” in the kingdom’s internal affairs.
Then, early Wednesday, Saudi resolve to punish Canada for its criticism of the kingdom’s treatment of domestic dissenters and activists was again made clear after the Saudi central bank and state-managed pension funds ordered their foreign-based asset managers to liquidate their Canadian equities, bonds and cash holdings “no matter the cost.” Those funds were estimated by the Financial Times at around $100 billion.
That announcement was then followed by a statement from Saudi foreign minister Adel Al-Jubeir, who asserted that “What Canada did was unacceptable […] There is no need for mediation, Canada knows what it needs to do, it must change its policies, ways with The Kingdom.” He then ominously warned that the “Saudis are still weighing other measures to take against Canada.”
If Riyadh’s on-going squabble with Qatar is any indication, the Saudis are likely to continue to flexing their political and economic muscle in an effort to push the Canadian government to capitulate, even if it results in the Saudis pushing truly bizarre countermeasures.
Yet, while the Saudis themselves and much of the media coverage have painted the increasingly bizarre stand-off as a result of “human rights” concerns, it is unlikely that Saudi Arabia’s offense at a single tweet from the Canadian Foreign Ministry is to blame for the rapid decay in bilateral relations.
Indeed, some have speculated that the fierce response from the Saudis is intended to serve as a warning to any other government that would seek to criticize Saudi policy, particularly those policies ordered by the kingdom’s “reformer,” Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman (MBS). If this is the case, the high price Canada is paying for a single tweet critical of the Saudi government is a clear sign to other nations that the Saudi government will not tolerate dissent in any form, whether from its own people or from other nations. Tommy Robinson winds up bigots and the cash floods in
Tommy Robinson, the far-right leader, was bankrolled until recently by a US tech billionaire whose company’s British clients include the supermarket giant Asda.
Robert Shillman, founder and chairman of the Nasdaq-listed multinational Cognex, helped to pay Robinson’s high-five-figure salary, in the latest example of American cash flowing into the British hard right. The disclosure comes as Robinson’s former assistant, also paid by a Shillman-funded group, told The Sunday Times that the anti-Islam activist practised a form of “panto journalism” that was “leading people down a dark path”.
In the first interview by any insider, Lucy Brown, who worked closely alongside Robinson until three months ago, said: “I thought genuinely that I was joining the side that told the truth and I’ve come to realise that it’s not. It’s just about getting [YouTube] views and retweets. This is a business and your outrage, valid as it is, will be monetised as such.” (more...)

UPDATE: August 11: Worldwide Coalition Against Islam Coming to Toronto
On August 11th, the Calgary-based Worldwide Coalition Against Islam (WCAI) is holding a rally at Nathan Phillips Square at 2PM. They are hoping for 200 to attend, including the most physically aggressive far-right groups like the Soldiers of Odin, Proud Boys, and the Northern Guard.
Counter-demonstrators will be at the square at 1PM and are expected to include anti-fascist and anti-racist groups, labour, Jewish community groups, and faith groups. In Toronto, counter-demonstrators usually match or outnumber far-right rallies. When the Worldwide Coalition Against Islam tried to host a rally in Vancouver, they were overwhelmed by 5000 peaceful anti-racist demonstrators. They haven't been back since.
This comes on the anniversary of the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, which saw neo-Nazis marching with tiki torches past a synagogue shouting “Jews will not replace us!” The rally culminated in a neo-Nazi murdering Heather Heyer and injuring several others when he drove his car into a crowd of counter-demonstrators.
The leader of WCAI, Joey De Luca is a criminal with convictions for drug dealing and assault causing bodily harm. De Luca celebrated the murder of Heather Heyer, as did his Vice President Jesse Wielenga. Both say they found it funny.
Here is what they represent, in their own words:
“Our logo is a picture of a Muslim getting booted the hell out of the country. I mean we can’t get any more straightforward with our message than that.” (more...)

'Blowback': US Recruitment of Nazis
Blowback investigates a hushed up but vitally important chapter in American history. It explores US recruitment of Nazis and Nazi collaborators in Europe through programs such as the Gehlen Organization, Klaus Barbie's network and the Labor Service Battalions. Perhaps more significantly, Blowback reveals the government-approved (though usually extralegal) immigration of ex Nazis and colloborators into the United States itself and the significant impact this has had on American society.
Among the wealth of new material in this book, Blowback brings to light for the first time how senior members of the State Department and the CIA, including noted diplomat George F Kennan, helped organize clandestine programs that brought high ranking Nazis and Axis government officials to America--and how the State Department has covered up the evidence ever since how the Pentagon falsified its own files to bring former Nazi scientists some of them 55 officers such as Wernher von Braun into the country, how in 1948, Nazis on the US intelligence payroll seriously misrepresented the nature and extent of the Soviet threat, thereby heightening the cold war, how the Pentagon trained and equipped former Nazi collaborators for use as anti communist guerrillas in the event of a nuclear confrontation, how the CIA has spent MILLIONS to bankroll anti Semitic emigre political groups inside the United States and has consistently hidden the part played by leaders of these groups during the Holocaust.
Blowback is a sober and sobering account of how a clandestine national security policy often embarked on for limited pragmatic ends, has resulted in a disastrous blowback effect that escaped the control of its instigators, unseated those who had participated in is inception and contributed to the hysteria of the cold war and the McCarthy era. Authoritative, shocking, controversial, Blowback opens for public scrutiny a chapter of our recent history that remains essential to the understanding of our world but that many would prefer to keep shut. -- Source

Christopher Simpson on 'The Splendid Blond Beast'
The most appalling crime in human affairs is certainly genocide. But perhaps even more shocking is the fact that those who organize and even those who commit mass murder are rarely punished for what they have done. Most, in fact, profit from their crimes. The Splendid Blond Beast is the latest investigation into this seamiest side of the twentieth century, from the author of the award-winning Blowback, the groundbreaking study of the U.S. government's recruitment of former Nazis. Christopher Simpson's new research reveals that CIA chief Allen Dulles organized the escape of the highest-ranking SS killer to survive World War II, along with a number of the officer's senior aides. Each of these Nazis had been personally responsible for the deportation of Jews to death camps and for mass executions of resistance fighters. Dulles also used U.S. government lists to help install former slave-labor specialists in key positions in postwar Germany. In addition to presenting this revelatory expose of government malfeasance, Simpson traces the roots of mass murder as an instrument of state power, from the Armenian genocide of World War I through Hitler's Holocaust. He shows how the existing structures of international law and commerce have at critical points actually encouraged mass murder and the escape of war criminals. Corporate looting and profiteering at the expense of innocents are often built into genocide, Simpson contends, and influence which killers are most likely to escape justice and who is predisposed to help them. The Splendid Blond Beast is a disturbing and often profound book about the roots of evil in our time.
