Child-porn suspect worked at school and as kids' magician

Police have laid child pornography charges against an educational assistant at a Winnipeg elementary school who also encountered children in his spare time as a magician known as Dan The Magic Man.

Daniel Kamenicky, 39, has been charged with voyeurism, making pornography and distributing pornography.

He was employed at Windsor School, a kindergarten to Grade 8 school in the Louis Riel School Division. Division superintendent Duane Brothers said Kamenicky worked for the school division for at least four years -- as long as Brothers has been superintendent -- and was suspended immediately after staff was notified by police about the charges.

"Our schools (are) opening next week and he will not be in our schools," Brothers said.

He said the school division requires every employee to complete standard criminal record and child abuse checks, and Kamenicky was "absolutely" subjected to those checks as well.

"We are very distressed about hearing this information," he said.

"Winnipeg’s Police Service has been very quick at giving me a heads up on this, and we are going to co-operate completely with the Winnipeg Police Service as they continue their investigation."

Kamenicky also taught magic to children between the ages of eight and 11 in one of the University of Manitoba's Mini U programs in July, the university's director of public affairs said Monday.  (more...)
