To our shame, we have been a haven for Nazi war criminals.
“Canada has a very problematic record, I have to say,” notes Dr. Efraim Zuroff, chief Nazi hunter for the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Israel. “The Americans have been very successful and the Canadians have not.”
An estimated 2,000 Nazi war criminals quietly slipped into Canada following the Second World War and the government did virtually nothing for 40 years. In 1985, prime minster Brian Mulroney established the Deschenes Commission to look into how war criminals managed to immigrate to Canada. Its recommendations led to the Canada War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity Act, passed in 1987, which gave Canadian courts the jurisdiction to prosecute the estimated 20 war criminals still living in this country.
