For Catholic and evangelical Christians, as well as for orthodox Jews and Muslims and assorted other religions who take a doctrinal line on their respective faiths, the restraint of sexual conduct within codified moral bounds is the cornerstone of the good society.
In society at large, most people take a “live and let live” approach to sexual preferences. But for those who cannot in good conscience accept the new paradigm, sexual education curriculums promoting early awareness of the sexuality spectrum and a non-judgmental approach to teenage sexual exploration have become a cultural red line. Well-organized parent protests calling for revisions to Ontario’s new sex-ed curriculum, set to commence operation later this year, have become commonplace. A mass absence from classes took place last week.
In a new wrinkle, resistant Muslim parents have channelled their discomfort with the curriculum into bricks and mortar activism. Rauf Academy in northwestern Toronto, a new private school with 30 students and six teachers who teach Islamic Studies and languages as well as the regular curriculum, is a testament to parental anger.
