St. Albert trans teacher in limbo awaiting court decision

An Edmonton judge has reserved his decision on whether an Alberta transgender teacher, who was fired in 2008 for having a sex change, can have his case heard in front of the human rights tribunal.

Jan Buterman, who was removed from the Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools substitute teachers list after his gender switch was deemed unacceptable by the school district and not in line with Catholic values, was back in court Friday awaiting the decision on his appeal of a settlement hearing which Buterman argues was decided upon despite dissenting opinion.

Court was adjourned on Friday afternoon, but the judge has decided to stay his decision, which Buterman says could take weeks or even months.  (more...)
