Parents — even Alberta ‘hillbillies’ — have a right to make choices about their children’s education

Naheed Nenshi apparently believes that there's only one way to prevent
anti-gay bullying, the rights of parents be damned.
Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi declared last week that any opposition to imposing Gay-Straight Alliances on Alberta schools was motivated by hatred on the part of unwelcoming “hillbillies” who embarrass Alberta on the international stage.

His Worship is obviously not familiar with the the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which expressly states that “Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.”  This basic human right of all parents, to protect their own children from being indoctrinated into an ideology that undermines the traditions and morality which parents teach their children at home, is no less important than other human rights, like the right to a fair trial before an impartial judge, or the right to own and enjoy one’s property.

His Worship also appears to be ignorant of section 93 of Canada’s Constitution Act, 1867, which expressly protects the rights of parents to educate their children in the same belief system that they teach their children at home. This applies to sexuality as much as other moral issues and topics. This constitutional guarantee protects parental rights from being undermined by politicians who wish to please a majority, whether Catholic, Protestant, atheist, progressive, secularist, or any other kind.  (more...)
