Vancouver Catholic schools agree to accommodate transgendered students
Independent Catholic schools in Vancouver have quietly approved a policy to accommodate transgendered students after settling a human rights complaint brought by an 11-year-old student.
The announcement was made in a low-key news release Wednesday, a marked contrast to the furor that raged for weeks after trustees within the Vancouver School Board were flooded with angry responses from parents who packed public information meetings when that board stated its intention to make similar accommodations.
The issue became so divisive that the two trustees who opposed the measure were tossed from their political party after they suggested the policy would be a deterrent for foreign families who wouldn’t want their children going to schools with unisex bathrooms and more gender sensitivity. (more...)
