OISE Gayifies Biology

A study conducted by the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education examined a grade 12 biology textbook for "evidence of gender and sexuality bias.  Analysis of the text revealed that heterosexuality was the only sexual identity represented and references to genders other than male and female were omitted."

The two main research questions were whether the biology textbook "supports the existence of alternative sexualities (Lesbian, gay, and bisexual, for example)? and whether the text "promotes fixed sex and gender identities only (omitting transgendered, transsexual, and intersexed identities, for example)?

The OISE document states that they made a table to search for "evidence of promoting two fixed genders and heteronomitivity" which OISE probably considers a hate crime.

The authors of the study lament that "the McGraw Hill Ryerson Biology 12 text contained no references to alternative sexualities.... For instance, reproductive organs were described in relation to heterosexual uses and reproduction was presented only in terms of engaging in heterosexual sex."  (more...)
