Boys forgotten victims in human trafficking, says MP

CONSERVATIVE MP JOY SMITH
OTTAWA — Female victims of sex trafficking get most of the headlines, but boys are victims too, says anti-human trafficking crusader and Conservative MP Joy Smith.

"Absolutely it's a problem here," Smith said. "I've worked with five cases these last three years that involved boys."

Around the world, the 2012 UN's Global Report in Trafficking in Persons found up to 10% of human trafficking cases around the world involved boys.

In Canada, says Smith, the sex trafficking of boys is usually a domestic crime.

"There are a few that are brought from other countries, but this is born-and-bred Canadians trafficking Canadians," she said.

She says a particularly heinous case involved a boy who was shipped like human cargo from paedophile to paedophile.  (more...)

  1. Sexual abuse of preteen and teen boys is a problem that has been largely ignored. In the United States, there are 60 million adult survivors of child sexual abuse and 39 million were abused before the age of 14. Of those 26 million are female and 13 million are male. The remaining 21 million were first abused between the ages of 14 and 18. In this group, 10 million are females and 11 million are male. In both groups, the vast majority of boys (and girls for that matter) were abused by men or older boys.
