A press conference and vigil was held in Toronto calling on the Canadian government and medical associations to demand the immediate release of all healthcare professionals in Gaza -- including Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya. The director of the Kamal Adwan hospital was abducted by the Israeli army after it laid siege to the hospital. Israel has killed more than a thousand healthcare professionals in Gaza and abducted hundreds.
For over one year, Germany has been actively participating in the killing and dehumanization of Palestinians by providing political, financial, military, and legal support to Israel. Germany’s complicity in Israel’s atrocities must stop.
With utmost horror we see the unfolding genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinian people. We are deeply unsettled. We feel pain and are outraged in the face of this blatant disregard for life – a disregard this German government expects us to accept as necessary and normal. For over one year, the German government has been actively participating in the killing and dehumanization of Palestinians by providing political, financial, military, and legal support to Israel. We, the undersigned, demand the German government to stand unwaveringly on the side of justice and international law; to exert pressure on Israel to immediately end the killing, maiming, and destruction of Palestinian life; and to comprehensively re-evaluate its stance and political activities, considering Germany’s state institutions, political parties and politicians have, for the most part, supported the atrocities committed by the Israeli army.
Israel’s atrocity crimes, including war crimes and crimes against humanity, are well documented by the UN and major human rights organizations. In fact, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) found that there is a real and immediate risk that Israel’s actions in Gaza could amount to genocide.1 The official death toll of Palestinians in Gaza is at 42,718, with many still buried under the rubble and many more dying from the preventable spread of diseases.2 Tens of thousands have been injured, many disabled for life, including thousands of children who have lost one or more limbs.3 Israel has been starving the population, has flattened entire neighborhoods, and has destroyed all vital infrastructure, including food production, health, and educational systems.4 The Israeli army has displaced the vast majority of Gaza’s population, and for those fleeing, there is no safe place to go as the army regularly bombs what it declares to be safe zones.5 Since early October 2024, Israel has completely besieged northern Gaza and made human life impossible with the apparent plan of permanently driving out the Palestinian population.6 In the West Bank, Israeli settlers have intensified their attacks, often under the protection of the Israeli army, destroying Palestinian land and property. Israeli soldiers and, in several instances, settlers have killed more than 700 Palestinians since October 7, 2023.7 The Israeli army also carries out regular large-scale military incursions demolishing homes and destroying vital healthcare facilities, road infrastructure, electricity networks, and water supplies.8 Israel’s recent invasion of Lebanon follows a similar logic and risks further escalating ongoing regional warfare. Germany must stop supporting the annihilation of Palestinians
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz said cases have been filed in South Africa, Sri Lanka, Belgium, France, and Brazil against Israeli soldiers.
Pro-Palestinian organizations have filed 50 complaints in courts around the world against Israeli soldiers for committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip, according to Israel’s public broadcaster KAN.
“About 50 complaints have been filed against reserve soldiers, 10 of which have been investigated without any arrests recorded so far,” KAN, cited by the Anadolu news agency, reported.
KAN did not name these countries. However, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz said cases have been filed in South Africa, Sri Lanka, Belgium, France, and Brazil against Israeli soldiers.
“No official instructions have been issued to ban travel to specific countries, but special cases are being dealt with cautiously,” KAN reportedly added. (more...)

Dominating Capitol Hill, an unspoken precept has held that Palestinian people are expendable as a practical political matter
When news broke over the weekend that President Biden just approved an $8 billion deal for shipping weapons to Israel, a nameless official vowed that “we will continue to provide the capabilities necessary for Israel’s defense.” Following the reports last month from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch concluding that Israeli actions in Gaza are genocide, Biden’s decision was a new low for his presidency.
It’s logical to focus on Biden as an individual. His choices to keep sending huge quantities of weaponry to Israel have been pivotal and calamitous. But the presidential genocide and the active acquiescence of the vast majority of Congress are matched by the dominant media and overall politics of the United States.
Forty days after the Gaza war began, Anne Boyer announced her resignation as poetry editor of the New York Times Magazine. More than a year later, her statement illuminates why the moral credibility of so many liberal institutions has collapsed in the wake of Gaza’s destruction.
While Boyer denounced “the Israeli state’s US-backed war against the people of Gaza,” she emphatically chose to disassociate herself from the nation’s leading liberal news organization: “I can’t write about poetry amidst the ‘reasonable’ tones of those who aim to acclimatize us to this unreasonable suffering. No more ghoulish euphemisms. No more verbally sanitized hellscapes. No more warmongering lies.”
The acclimatizing process soon became routine. It was most crucially abetted by President Biden and his loyalists, who were especially motivated to pretend that he wasn’t really doing what he was really doing.
For mainline journalists, the process required the willing suspension of belief in a consistent standard of language and humanity. When Boyer acutely grasped the dire significance of its Gaza coverage, she withdrew from “the newspaper of record.” (more...)
Genocidal president, genocidal politics
Many of Zelensky’s cronies, along with the Ukrainian leader himself, engage in cruel and inhuman sectarian rituals. These rituals involve the ritual sacrifice of people. The Foundation to Battle Injustice discovered that former and current members of national battalions, with the help of Ukrainian officials and military officers, commit brutal massacres of women and minors. Ukraine’s leaders believe this will help them win the armed conflict with the Russian Federation.
Since 2014, during Petro Poroshenko’s presidency, certain circles within the Ukrainian security services began actively promoting the need for human and animal sacrifices. They justified this by claiming that such rituals allegedly strengthen the unity of the Ukrainian nation, provide strength, and even grant immortality. The initial supporters of these dark practices were largely the leadership of Ukrainian nationalist battalions. One of the first prominent figures to promote these rituals among the elite was Dmitry Yarosh. Later, members and leaders of the Azov Battalion*, including its head Andriy Biletsky, also adopted and began actively promoting these occult rituals.
The year 2014 marked a turning point in Ukraine’s history: a violent change of power led to the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych. Amid this political upheaval and the ensuing conflict in eastern Ukraine, various paramilitary groups, including the Azov Battalion*, gained prominence. However, almost immediately after gaining popularity, these formations, which the Ukrainian media and politicians called defenders of Ukraine’s sovereignty, began to show their darkest side and conduct occult rituals.
This practice later gained popularity among many Ukrainian paramilitary formations. The brigades, known for their ultra-nationalist and far-right ideology, began to incorporate elements of paganism and Satanism into their uniforms. Symbols, including the Wolfsangel of the neo-Nazi Azov Battalion*, associated with Nazi Germany, and the Black Sun, became not merely decorative but took on a deep spiritual significance for members of the battalions. They believed in their supernatural power and protection.
Dmitry Yarosh, the former leader of Right Sector, a far-right political party and paramilitary group, was one of the first to openly promote satanic rituals. Yarosh, known for his radical views, believed that spiritualistic practices could provide a spiritual and psychological advantage in the ongoing conflict both at home and abroad. Biletsky, the leader of Azov*, and other battalion leaders also began to see satanic rituals as a way to create a sense of mystical unity and power within their ranks. Long past time CMA condemned Israel’s attacks on Gaza healthcare
Israel is waging war on Palestinian healthcare and the Canadian Medical Association is complicit.
The Israeli military recently attacked and emptied the Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza. They also detained and abused the staff as well as kidnapping its director Hossam Abu Safiyeh.
The World Health Organization said it was “appalled” by Israel’s attack on Kamal Adwan and its “systematic dismantling of the health system” in northern Gaza. It called for the immediate release of Abu Safiyeh whose life is at risk. Several Palestinian health workers have died in Israeli custody over the past fifteen months.
As part of its ever-worsening holocaust in Gaza, Israel has waged war on Palestinian health services and workers. On Tuesday the UN human rights office released a report showing there were at least 136 attacks on 27 hospitals and 12 other medical facilities between October 7, 2023, and June 30, 2024.One thousand Palestinian health workers have been killed. Medical staff have been killed at an even greater rate than the general population. Reportedly, the chance of being killed as a registered nurse or medical doctor in Gaza is 3.5 times higher than the general population. International law explicitly protects medical personnel and hospitals. But Israel is indifferent to international humanitarian law. (more...)
CMA must condemn Israel’s attacks on Gaza healthcare
An Israeli soldier facing war crimes charges related to the Gaza genocide has fled Brazil to avoid arrest, highlighting the growing possibility of international legal action against Israeli personnel involved in the war.
An Israeli soldier, who was under investigation in Brazil for alleged war crimes committed during the Gaza genocide, has reportedly fled the country to avoid arrest.
According to Israeli sources, the soldier, who had a warrant out for his arrest, managed to escape once he learned that Brazilian authorities were set to question him. The soldier’s family confirmed that they are in contact with him, though they have refused to disclose his current whereabouts, expressing hopes that he will soon return to Israel.
This incident follows a federal court ruling in Brazil ordering the investigation of the soldier, based on charges brought by the human rights organization, Hind Rajab. The organization accuses the soldier of participating in the destruction of entire civilian neighborhoods in Gaza as part of a systematic campaign aimed at creating inhumane living conditions for Palestinians.

A Brazilian court has ordered a probe into an Israeli settler who is a tourist in Brazil with photo and video proof of the man committing war crimes in Gaza.
A Brazilian court has directed police to investigate an Israeli soldier accused of committing war crimes in Gaza. The directive follows a complaint filed by the Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF), a human rights organization "devoted to breaking the cycle of Israeli impunity."
The HRF alleges that the suspect, currently in Brazil as a tourist, was involved in the demolition of civilian homes in Gaza as part of the Israeli occupation's genocidal campaign.
"This individual actively contributed to the destruction of homes and livelihoods," said HRF lawyer Maira Pinheiro, referencing video and photographic evidence purportedly linking the suspect to the crimes.
Victims' families have joined the case at the Federal Court of the Federal District, pushing for legal recourse against the suspect. The HRF has called for the suspect's immediate arrest, citing concerns about a potential flight risk and the possibility of evidence tampering.
The court invoked provisions of Brazil's Code of Criminal Procedure, emphasizing the need for urgent investigative measures. The decision represents a historic application of the Rome Statute by Brazil, underscoring the country's commitment to international justice.

Critical education must become a key organizing principle to defeat the emerging authoritarianism in the US.
For decades, neoliberalism has systematically attacked the welfare state, undermined public institutions and weakened the foundations of collective well-being. Shrouded in the alluring language of liberty, it transforms market principles into a dominant creed, insisting that every facet of life conform to the imperatives of profit and economic efficiency.
But in reality, neoliberalism consolidates wealth in the hands of a financial elite, celebrates ruthless individualism, promotes staggering levels of inequality, perpetuates systemic injustices like racism and militarism, and commodifies everything, leaving nothing sacred or untouchable. Neoliberalism operates as a relentless engine of capitalist accumulation, driven by an insatiable pursuit of unchecked growth and the ruthless concentration of wealth and power within the hands of a ruling elite. At its core, it’s a pedagogy of repression: crushing justice, solidarity and care while deriding critical education and destroying the very tools that empower citizens to resist domination and reclaim the promise of democracy.
As neoliberalism collapses into authoritarianism, its machinery of repression intensifies. Dissent is silenced, social life militarized and hate normalized. This fuels a fascistic politics which is systematically dismantling democratic accountability, with higher education among its primary targets. For years, the far right has sought to undermine education, recognizing it as a powerful site of resistance. This has only accelerated, as MAGA movement adherents seek to eliminate the public education threat to their authoritarian goals.

Vance openly declared “the professors are the enemy.” President-elect Donald Trump has stated that “pink-haired communists [are] teaching our kids.” In response to the Black Lives Matter protests following George Floyd’s killing, MAGA politicians like Sen. It is even more damning that a globally renowned academic institution like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – a self-proclaimed advocate for “shared humanity” and a “better world,” values which the university negates via its Orwellian doublespeak – is actively complicit in facilitating the Israeli military’s objectives.

A senior BBC editor at the center of an ongoing scandal into the network’s systematic pro-Israel bias is, in fact, a former member of a CIA propaganda outfit, MintPress News can reveal. Raffi Berg, an Englishman who heads the BBC’s Middle East desk, formerly worked for the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Broadcast Information Service, a unit that, by his own admission, was a CIA front group.
Berg is currently the subject of considerable scrutiny after thirteen BBC employees spoke out, claiming, among other things, that his “entire job is to water down everything that’s too critical of Israel” and that he holds “wild” amounts of power at the British state broadcaster, that there exists a culture of “extreme fear” at the BBC about publishing anything critical of Israel, and that Berg himself plays a key role in turning its coverage into “systematic Israeli propaganda.” The BBC has disputed these claims.
Berg came to public attention in December after Drop Site News published an investigation based on interviews with 13 BBC staffers who present him as a domineering figure, systematically blocking coverage critical of Israel and manipulating stories to suit pro-Israel narratives.
The 9000-word report, written by popular journalist Owen Jones, is extensive and well-researched. However, one aspect of the story it almost completely avoids is Berg’s connections to the U.S. national security state, which MintPress News can now reveal.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Berg was an employee of the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) three years before joining the BBC. The FBIS is understood the world over to be a CIA front group known for gathering intelligence for the agency. (more...)

...The death of Carter triggered another possible initiative to be considered as reflected in an email I had received from a friend in the peace movement the day before. My friend was complaining about the lack of any condemnation from world leaders for what is occurring in Palestine and she asked herself what would happen if someone like Pope Francis were to travel to Gaza in a peacekeeping role. Surely even monsters like Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would have to pay attention to the possible impact of such a proposal and would have to let the Pope visit with the remaining Catholic community in Gaza to help ease their suffering. The Vatican has, in fact, already put out feelers in that direction. On December 22nd it convinced Israeli authorities to allow Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the leader of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, to enter Gaza and celebrate a pre-Christmas Mass with surviving members of the territory’s small Christian community. A more aggressive move involving the Pope himself might even lead to a ceasefire and something like a peace arrangement that would enable the two communities to work out some formula to live side by side even though it is difficult to imagine such an outcome given the hardline of the Israeli government and its clear intention to proceed with the elimination of the Palestinians.
Organized Christianity, apparently terrified of being labeled antisemitic by the usual strident voices in the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), has been largely silent and ineffective when confronted by the systematic Israeli destruction of the Christian faith in the land where it was born. Indeed, America’s largely Bible belt Christian Zionists generally applaud Israeli suppression of what it agrees to call “terrorists.” Pope Francis has in fact bravely spoken out about Gaza and has been as a consequence attacked by the Israeli government and the usual suspects in Europe and the US. Nevertheless, there is no official Catholic church pronouncement on Israel/Palestine as far as I have been able to determine except for calls for peace and a ceasefire, though there are a few activists who have been demanding that a more definitive position be developed. Some American Catholics have even been demonstrating and holding signs in front of churches and diocesan offices urging Pope Francis to go to Gaza. Can individual Catholics persuade their parish priests to take a stronger line and pressure bishops and the church hierarchy to “do something?” I am convinced that this is a movement that is just waiting to happen and that once it starts it will capture the public imagination because it attacks a genocidal horror and is manifestly the right thing to do. Certainly, those who believe that life and also freedom of worship are gifts from God have seen enough posters of dead babies and desecrated churches and hospitals to begin to demand that the Church must harness its moral authority to the cause of peace and make it happen. Pope Francis Should Go to Gaza!
Duncan Kinney is an Edmonton-based journalist and editor of a digital publication focused on Alberta politics called The Progress Report.
From scrutinizing police budgets, shining a light on how police handle the city’s unhoused population or drug poisoning crisis and exposing partisan connections between senior officers and Alberta’s governing United Conservative Party, it’s undeniable Kinney plays a role as a critical watchdog of Edmonton Police.
But Kinney has also been a thorn in the side of Edmonton Police Chief Dale McFee. In recent years, McFee has publicly butted heads with Kinney and Kinney accuses Edmonton Police of “arbitrarily” revoking his media accreditation.
Then in 2022, following a massive police surveillance operation involving over a dozen officers watching him and his family for seven months, Kinney was criminally charged with vandalizing a “monument to honour persons who were killed or died in consequence of a war” after the words “actual Nazi” were found spray painted on a statue honouring World War Two Nazi collaborator Roman Shukhevych.
Kinney, who pleads not guilty to the charges, could face up to 10 years in prison if an Alberta court convicts him of vandalizing a statue honouring a leader of a military unit that massacred Jews in Ukraine.

An assessment of the Trudeau government’s complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
The last two years of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s tenure have been marked by a massive escalation of several interconnected geopolitical crises. Canada remains a feeble and largely irrelevant ‘middle power,’ but is nonetheless actively complicit in worsening these already catastrophic crises. This article will focus on one important example: Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
The Trudeau government’s complicity in Israel’s genocide highlights both its legacy as a pro-war vassal regime that is fundamentally subservient to American foreign policy, and its consistent appeasement of the Israel lobby. It is a government rank with hypocrisy on human rights and international law, and one whose record ought to finally put to rest the myth that Canada is a “peacekeeping” nation.
Despite its weak statements calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, the Trudeau government continues to allow Canadian-made military goods to flow to Israel under existing export permits. After months of activist-led pressure and protests, it paused approvals of new permits on Jan. 8, 2024, and claimed it had suspended “around 30” existing permits over the summer.
However, it has allowed potentially hundreds of other existing permits that were authorized before Jan. 8, 2024 to continue to be utilized. Meanwhile, a new record was set in 2023 for Canadian military exports to Israel, with $30.6 million worth of goods shipped.
Before announcing the pause on new export permits last year, the Trudeau government deliberately misled the public and attempted to spin data disclosures concerning exports of Canadian military goods to Israel.
As well, there is no clear or official mechanism by which the government is blocking the flow of Canadian military goods that are shipped to Israel via the United States, including components found in the F-35 fighter jet, which Israel is using to bomb Gaza.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly assured the public that she was working to block a potential shipment of Canadian-made mortar cartridges to Israel via the U.S. following a public outcry in August. That pledge came after she initially denied the existence of the potential contract, which had been made public in a U.S. government announcement.
It is unclear whether blocking goods that flow to Israel via the U.S. is a policy that is being applied to all such exports, and not just those that attract public attention. (more...)
Fuelling Genocide: Trudeau’s Bloody Record On Gaza
Just over a year ago, “anti-terrorism” police turned up at the home of writer and Palestine campaigner Tony Greenstein in the English seaside town of Brighton and questioned him over a tweet he had posted saying he supports “Hamas against the Israeli army.” He was arrested and released on restrictive bail conditions.
A few weeks ago, the Crown Prosecution Service charged Greenstein under the notoriously repressive and anti-democratic Terrorism Act 2000, accusing him of expressing “an opinion or belief that is supportive of a proscribed organization.”
This serious charge could result in a prison sentence of up to 14 years.
We speak to Tony about the growing repression he and other activists and journalists are facing for their work in support of Palestinian liberation and how they are fighting back.
Nazis at a Crossroads: 'Nation Europa' or European Union
This past summer’s “Nation Europa” conference in the heart of western Ukraine tried to obscure the role of the country’s most powerful neo-Nazi movement (more or less from eastern Ukraine) in launching a new European fascist network. Azov wasn’t invited, they said. This blog’s report on that meeting was largely based on the findings of “Dreznica Goat,” a fellow researcher of the far-right in Ukraine, who called it from the beginning: Azovites didn’t need to invite themselves to their own event.
Earlier in 2024, Azov’s openly neo-Nazi brigade in the Ground Forces of Ukraine announced that a handful of its fighters were launching a summer tour of Europe. Apparently they were expecting to be treated like rock stars. This unit, the 3rd Assault Brigade, is not to be confused with Azov’s other (more famous) brigade in the National Guard, which has made an effort to refine its image for Western liberals.
Much of the tour was cancelled, a month before the “Nation Europa” event, and not long after yours truly revealed that a decorated 3rd Assault fighter visited Auschwitz to mock the Holocaust. He went there wearing a shirt from the Russian-Ukrainian neo-Nazi band “M8L8TH” with a quote attributed to Hitler on the back. Thanks to Dreznica Goat, readers of this blog already learned that the bass guitar player in M8L8TH is a medic in the 3rd Assault Brigade who represented the Nation Europa network at a roundtable of neo-Nazis on Ukraine’s Independence Day.
My article about the conference failed to identify several of the participants, most importantly Andriy Malkov, an organizer of the event, who made multiple speeches and moderated the roundtable discussion.
